COMPOSITE GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION CURVES FOR SAND SEDIMENTS AND
GRAIN SIZE SCALES FOR SEDIMENT
The grade scale most commonly used for sediments is the Wentworth (1922) scale which is a logarithmic scale in that each grade limit is twice as large as the next smaller grade limit. The scale starting at 1mm and changing by a fixed ratio of 2 was introduced by J.A. Udden (1898), who also named the sand grades we use today.
However, Udden drew the gravel/sand border at 1 mm and used different terms in the gravel and mud division. For more detailed work, sieves have bee constructed at intervals 2 ^(1/2) and 2^(1/14). The Φ (phi) scale, devised by Krumbein, is a much more convenient way of presenting data than if the values are expressed in millimeters, and is used almost entirely in recent work.

A "critical lift" is defined as any non-routine crane lift requiring detailed planning and additional or unusual safety precautions. Critical lifts include: lifts made where the load weight is greater than 75% of the rated capacity of the crane; lifts which require load to be lifted, swung or placed out of the operator's view ; lifts made with more than one crane; lifts involving non-routine/technically difficult rigging arrangement; hoisting personnel with a crane or derrick; or any lift which the crane operator believes should be critical.

1.4 COMPLIANT WITH MANDATORY AIR EMISSIONS REQUIREMENT
In order to be compliant with air emissions requirement, Two calendar years restriction is placed on this project The work must be scheduled and executed so that the substantial emission-producing work (i.e., dredging and material placement) is carried out evenly over two consecutive calendar years. The Contractor and the independent firm hired to assist the Contractor must maintain a running record of emissions in each calendar year to ensure that cumulative emissions as calculated by the Monthly Air Emissions Calculator do not exceed 92 units in any one calendar year.
1.5 PRE-OPERATIONAL PLANNING AND REPORTING
The Contractor must retain an independent firm having a minimum of 3 years of experience in calculating air emissions for equipment in the utility, process, construction or manufacturing industries to assist the Contractor in fulfilling the requirements of this section.
SECTION 01 11 35 Page 1
