About this file

This document is a technical order (TO) providing instructions for cleaning and maintaining ammunition handling equipment using specific cleaning compounds, ultrasonic cleaning processes, and drying procedures. Key details include:

The TO provides requirements for using MIL-C-87937 Type II cleaning compound and MIL-PRF-680 Type III degreasing solvent on metal parts. It specifies parameters for jet washing machines, including maximum temperature and pressure, as well as drying and lubrication requirements. The document also details ultrasonic cleaning requirements, including solution formulation, wash/rinse cycle times and temperatures, and air drying procedures. Additional instructions are provided for disassembling and reassembling ammunition return chutes.

The related federal contract opportunity is for a pre-solicitation to procure an F-16 weapon parts cleaner for the Army National Guard. The requirement is to clean internal components of the MAU-12 bomb rack, Triple Ejector Rack, and 20mm gun after use.

COMPOUND, AIRCRAFT CLEANING, MIL-C-87937, TYPE II 6

SOLVENT, DEGREASING, MIL-PRF-680, TYPE III 16

Pressure used for cleaning will not exceed 30 PSI. Compressed air used for cleaning may create an environment of propelled foreign particles. Protective skin and eye equipment is required. Failure to comply can result in serious injury to personnel.

NOTE

A jet washing machine with a purifier filtration system using MIL-C-87937, Type I or II, cleaning compound is acceptable for use on unpainted metal parts requiring degreasing, and cleaning. The jet washing machine must have a clean water rinse and drying process should not exceed ten minutes. The temperature and pressure of the washer should not exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) and 80 PSI, respectively. Some jet washing machine manufacturers may recommend an antifoam agent. Such agents should be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.

Manufacturer’s recommendation/precautions using machine should be followed with instructions contained herein.

If using MIL-C-29602, Type I or II, DO NOT USE an artifoam agent. MIL-C-29602 was designed specifically for jet washing machines. To avoid flash corrosion, parts should be dried (air dry or towel dry) upon removal from the washer. Subsequently, parts should be lubricated in accordance with appropriate lubrication requirements. Washing parts by hand using MIL-C-87937, Type II, followed by clean water rinsing and drying is an acceptable method of cleaning.

Clean all metal parts except bearings, lubricator, and Inner Drum with MIL-PRF-680 Type III or equivalent dry cleaning solvent. Wipe dry with a clean, low lint cloth or blow dry with low pressure, uncontaminated air not to exceed 30 PSI.

6.5 Ultrasonic Requirements.

BRULIN FORMULA 815GD 18

Do not install FRP drum helix or any other plastic parts in the ultrasonic parts washer. Nonmetal parts may become damaged during cleaning. Failure to comply could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

a. Ultrasonic washer is purchased commercially and must meet the following requirements. Cleaning tank is designed to hold cleaning solution and provide ultrasonic cleaning and agitation for cleaning of components, a separate tank is for clean water rinse. The dynamic processing machine must have variable sweep frequency capability and provide a water rinse with optional drying module following each wash/rinse cycle. Ultrasonic watt density shall not exceed 40 watts/gallon.

b. The temperature of the filtered washing and rinsing solution shall not exceed 160 °F and the self heated, high volume air drying module using air knives shall not exceed 200 °F. Adjustable heat and time settings for both tanks are required.

c. Solution of formula 815GD, product number 301007 will be mixed in an approximate 5 ounces solution to 1 gallon of water. Set wash tank to 160 °F and rinse tank to 140 °F. If difficulties are observed then the cleaning times could easily be adjusted. The times and settings should be repeatable and adjustable.

6.5.1 Cleaning Cycle.

a. Wash processing time shall not exceed 10 minutes per part per cleaning operation, limited to 30 minutes (3 cycles) for excessively soiled gun parts per cleaning operation. Parts shall not be allowed to contact the sides or bottom of the processing vessels. After cleaning, parts should be lubricated in accordance with technical order directives after processing.

b. The cleaning cycle is 10 minutes total time with the following settings:

(1) 135 Seconds ultrasonic cleaning

(2) 60 Seconds agitation/spray

(3) 135 Seconds ultrasonic cleaning

(4) 60 Seconds agitation/spray

(5) 135 Seconds ultrasonic cleaning

(6) 60 Seconds agitation/spray

6.5.2 Rinse Cycle. Rinse cycle should be 5 minutes in clean tap water.

6.5.3 Drying.

If using compressed air for cleaning equipment, keep the air pressure as low as practical but limit air pressure to less than 30 PSI. Also, ensure the nozzle discharge tip is a diffuser type. Compressed air will not be used to blow chips or other debris from a worker’s body or clothing. Effective chip guarding (nozzle discharge tip is a diffuser type) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be used. Also, to prevent flying chips and particles from striking the eyes and skin of the operator and bystanders, screens, barriers, or protective cones will be used. Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

Drying shall be accomplished by subjecting components to a blast of prepared dry and clean low-pressure compressed air not to exceed 30 PSI or by wiping surfaces of components with a clean, dry lint-free cloth.

7 AMMUNITION RETURN CHUTE(S).

7.1 Disassembly. See Figure 1 and disassemble the return chute as follows:

NOTE

Disassemble return chute only as required to accomplish repair.

a. Place chute, open side up, on clean workbench and position chute so that entrance end (4) is on the left, and exit end (5) is on the right.

b. On either side of chuting section to be removed, fully extend several chuting sections to allow for some space on either side of chuting section.

c. While looking into inspection hole of center section (1) immediately to left of section to be removed, slowly push this section toward the one to be removed until crossbar of link (2) connecting these two sections can be seen passing across
