2 Description of the Damaged Kawasaki Control Trailer Coach 1722
2.1 Bi-Level coach 1722 was manufactured by Kawasaki between the years of 1990 to 1991 for use on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Commuter Rail, which services the suburbs of Boston, MA. A mid-life overhaul was completed by Alstom Transportation and the coach was returned to the Authority in June of 2017. Coach 1722 is designated as a control trailer coach (CTC), equipped with an operator’s station at the right side of the No. 1 end and further described in the maintenance manuals provided in Appendix 3.
2.2 During an impact with a tree in the ROW, damage was caused to coach 1722 on the left side, interior of the vehicle, and No. 1 End of the coach. An initial inspection was completed by the MBTA and found that the damage included complete removal of the pilot bar and two windows, as well as damage to the track receiver assembly, trainline
