1. BACKGROUND:
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (hereinafter referred to as “BISO”) is located along the eastern portion of the border separating Kentucky and Tennessee.
Encompassing and protecting approximately 125,000 acres, the park was established by Congress on March 7, 1974. The park’s primary mission is to “provide management for the National Area so that natural and cultural resources are preserved and protected for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations”. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries are preserved in a free-flowing condition, providing a broad range of recreational opportunities which benefit the economically challenged region.
This project will address deferred maintenance and restore interior finishes in two of the most frequently used buildings at BISO— the Bandy Creek Visitor Center (VC) and the Bandy Creek Interpretation and Education Building (I&E). Contract labor will be utilized to sand and refinish approximately 4,700 square feet of hardwood flooring across both facilities. In addition, National Park Service Day Labor Crews will prepare and repaint interior walls and baseboards. These improvements will enhance the safety, service life, and appearance of both buildings, which play a vital role in visitor services and interpretive programming.
