About this file

This is a Statement of Need (SON) from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for the procurement of an Odyssey M imaging system with chemiluminescence and fluorescence capabilities.

The NHLBI requires a multimodal imaging system capable of generating detailed, reliable data across a broad range of current and future assays to support protein expression quantification and long non-coding RNA research. The specified product is the Odyssey® M (Part Number 3350-01A), an academic model configured for both chemiluminescence and fluorescence imaging. Key technical specifications include an sCMOS image sensor for fluorescence detection and a CCD sensor for chemiluminescence, selectable resolution settings from 5 to 100 micrometers, greater than 6 logs of dynamic range, an image field size of 25 cm × 18 cm, and 19 integrated imaging channels. The system supports multiple imaging modalities including near-infrared fluorescence, visible fluorescence, RGB imaging, and optional luminescence detection, with solid-state diode lasers at 488 nm, 520 nm, 685 nm, and 785 nm. The procurement includes acquisition and data analysis software (Image Studio), owner manuals, a desktop computer with monitor, accessories, on-site installation, and one-year warranty. The instrument must be shipped within 30 days and delivered to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at 10 Center Dr, Room 8N109, Bethesda, MD 20892, where it will be installed on the bench with computer connectivity. The point of contact information will be provided upon award.

Statement of Need (SON)

1. Project Title

Odyssey M - Chemi/Flour - Imaging Bundle

2. Statement of Need and Objectives

The NHLBI requires an imaging system capable of generating detailed, reliable data from every scanned sample while supporting a broad range of current and future assays. The Odyssey M meets this need through its sophisticated sCMOS image sensor, 5-micron resolution, high sensitivity, and broad dynamic range. Its NIR and visible fluorescence, RGB, and optional luminescence capabilities provide flexibility across multiple applications, while its 19 calibrated and integrated channels ensure consistent performance.

In addition, the system’s innovative line-scanning technology enables data acquisition in minutes rather than hours, improving efficiency and accelerating sample analysis. This system will allow us to quantify protein expression with greater precision, which is critical for experiments aimed at understanding the function and mechanisms of human-specific long non-coding RNAs.

3. Product Specifications/Features/Salient Characteristics

The Odyssey® M is a multimodal imaging system designed for high-sensitivity fluorescence and optional chemiluminescence imaging. It supports near-infrared and visible fluorescence, RGB true-color imaging, and optional luminescence detection, with calibrated integrated imaging channels for consistent performance across assays. LICORbio describes the system as using an sCMOS image sensor, line-scanning technology, and 5-micron resolution to support high-sensitivity, high-dynamic-range imaging in minutes rather than hours.

Key Technical Specifications

Imaging Modalities The system supports NIR fluorescence, visible fluorescence, RGB imaging, and optional chemiluminescence/luminescence imaging. The fluorescence plus chemiluminescence model includes 19 total channels, while the fluorescence-only model includes 18 total channels.

Detector System The Odyssey M uses an sCMOS image sensor for fluorescence imaging and a CCD sensor for chemiluminescence detection.

Resolution The system provides selectable resolution settings of 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 µm, allowing users to optimize image detail and acquisition speed depending on the assay.

Dynamic Range The Odyssey M provides greater than 6 logs of dynamic range for fluorescence and optional chemiluminescence imaging, obtained in a single acquisition.

Image Field Size The full image field size is 25 cm W × 18 cm D. The chemiluminescence scan region is 15 cm W × 11 cm D.

Light Sources The system includes RGB LED trans-illumination, RGB LED reflective illumination, and solid-state diode lasers at 488 nm, 520 nm, 685 nm, and 785 nm.

Supported Applications

The Odyssey M is suitable for a broad range of laboratory applications, including quantitative Western blotting, chemiluminescent Western blotting, protein arrays, EMSA/gel shift assays, glycoprotein staining, nucleic acid gel imaging, ELISA, In-Cell Western™ assays, On-Cell Western assays, RNAi analysis, tissue section imaging, and whole-slide imaging.
