About this file
The document is a comprehensive waste management and recycling guide for the City of Pittsburgh's Environmental Services Department for the year 2023. The guide covers detailed instructions for curbside collection of yard debris, recycling, household refuse, and special waste handling, including specific guidelines for reducing waste, reusing items, and proper disposal methods. The calendar provides a month-by-month breakdown of trash, recycling, and yard debris pickup schedules for the Northern and Southern regions of the city, with clear color-coded indicators for different types of collection and holiday schedules.
The guide emphasizes mandatory recycling, with items to be clean, loose, and placed in blue containers not exceeding 35 gallons. It outlines specific accepted recyclable materials, including cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum cans, and plastic and glass bottles. The document also provides crucial information on items not accepted for curbside pickup, such as electronic waste, hazardous materials, and construction debris. Special handling instructions are included for sharps, medical waste, and animal/human waste. The calendar highlights environmental service holidays and provides a QR code for additional online information, demonstrating the city's commitment to clear communication about waste management practices.

Reduce & Reuse Reduce and use less. Reduce your consumption by using reusable grocery bags, water bottles, glass containers, buying in bulk, and opting out of receiving paper mail.
Reuse: Everyday decisions make a difference. Consider buying second-hand items to reduce waste.
Yard Debris 2023 Curbside Collection: Yard Debris will be collected curbside for composting on Saturday, May 6 and Saturday, November 4.
Place at your trash/recycling collection site before 6 a.m. Yard debris must be in brown paper bags and not weigh more than 35 pounds. Branches must be bundled with fiber twine or natural rope in branch lengths of 5 feet or less.
Environmental Services will not accept stones, dirt, manure, lumber or food waste.
Yard waste in plastic bags or placed at the curb loose will NOT be accepted.
Consider using our year round drop-off locations for yard waste! For a list of drop-off locations, visit PittsburghPA.gov
Recycle Recycling is mandatory! The City collects recycling curbside every other week.
Curbside: Items must be clean, loose, and placed in a blue container not exceeding 35 gallons or City-issued container. All recyclables must be set away from household trash. SHREDDED PAPER WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED CURBSIDE FOR RECYCLING. It must be contained in a plastic bag and taken to a drop-off center for recycling.
Accepted Items:
» Cardboard, flatten and bundle into another box or bin for collection.
» Mixed paper includes items such as cereal boxes, newspaper, white officer paper, and junk mail.
» Aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans.

Electronic and Household Hazardous Waste The City of Pittsburgh DOES NOT collect TVs, computer monitors, Freon appliances, air conditioners, lithium ion batteries, dehumidifiers or household chemical waste such as lead base paint, automotive fluids, pesticides or any hazardous or flammable materials curbside.
