About this file
Special Packaging Instruction Summary
This is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document for a water refrigerating chiller (Code ID 98747, SPI No. F01-547-5222). The document provides detailed packaging and handling specifications for this military equipment destined for both serviceable and unserviceable applications. The item weighs 1,235 pounds and has dimensions of 47" x 47" x 41 3/4". Two packaging levels are specified: Level A with gross dimensions of 55" x 55" x 55" (94.010 cubic feet, 1,485 weight lbs) and Level B with identical outer dimensions but maintained gross specifications. Both levels utilize ASTM D6256 (MDD) standards for packaging materials.
The packaging construction includes a wooden container base with skids, floor boards, end sills, side sills, and lag bolt assemblies as detailed in the bill of materials. Specific closure requirements mandate ASTM D6256 compliance for both levels. Special handling instructions prohibit stacking, require lifting by base only, and mandate removal of lag bolts from the top, sides, and bottom prior to opening. All wood packaging materials must comply with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM No. 15) requirements, utilizing debarked wood with heat treatment to 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 minutes minimum, with certification by an accredited agency recognized by the American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC). The instruction includes caution notices regarding pad placement and notes that packaging materials may be substituted if equivalent protection is provided without increased government cost.
