About this file
This is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document for a radar transmitter item, issued by the Air Force (406 SCMS, Hill AFB, Utah). The document specifies detailed packaging, preservation, and marking requirements for military shipment and storage under MIL-STD-2073 military preservation standards.
The item, identified as National Stock Number 5840-01-583-3790, must be packaged according to two distinct levels: Level A for domestic serviceable use and Level B for international or extended storage. Both levels require ASTM D6251 closure standards. Packaging specifications include specific container dimensions (Level A: 44" x 31" x 31"; Level B: 46" x 33" x 36½"), with gross weights of 32,064 cubic feet and 450 pounds respectively, and design fragility rating of 85. The document mandates use of debarked, heat-treated wood packaging materials (56°C/133°F for 30 minutes minimum) with certification from an accredited agency recognized by the American Lumber Standards Committee, in compliance with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM No. 15). Specific packaging components are required including strapping, barrier bags, wrap, cushioning, and skids with detailed material specifications. Special markings must include the SPI number on container identification sides, containers must be reusable with no external storage, and items must be lifted by base only. The document includes caution notices regarding asset repackaging exemptions if SPI integrity is maintained and overseas packaging requirements at Level A minimum.
