PAY ITEM NO. 102-5000 Water for Dust Control

Description: The work specified under this Section consists of the furnishing and application of Water on the construction area including but not limited to sub-grade, un-surfaced base, or other un-surfaced traveled ways, or areas of cleared vegetation, in order to control dust resulting from construction operations.

The locations and frequency of application must be as directed by the Engineer.

Water used for controlling moisture content of surfaces to meet compaction requirements, mixture and/or working of material, etc. is at the expense of the contractor, included in the work being performed and not paid as “Water For Dust Control”. The water used may be obtained from any approved source that meets Federal, State and local requirements.

Measurement and Payment: The work specified under this Section must be paid for at the contract unit price per thousand gallons of Water for Dust Control.

PAY ITEM NO. 111-111 Concrete Matting

Description: This work shall consist of furnishing all labor, materials, equipment, loading, transporting and installation of the concrete matting in accordance with this specification.

Concrete matting is manufactured from individual concrete blocks tied together with high strength polypropylene biaxial geogrid. Each block is tapered, beveled and interlocked and includes connections that prevent lateral displacement of the blocks within the mats when they are lifted for placement.

Tied Concrete Block Mats shall be Flexamat, manufactured by Motz Enterprises, Inc. or approved equal (See Alternative Products).

Blocks. Furnish blocks manufactured with concrete conforming to the cement requirements of ASTM C150 and to the aggregate requirements of ASTM C33. Meet a minimum compressive strength of 5,000 psi at 28 days. Furnish blocks that have a minimum weight of 3 lb. per block and placed no further than 2 in.

apart.

Polypropylene Bi-Axial Geogrid. The geogrid will be composed of Polypropylene multifilament yarns coated with an acrylic based coating which is designed to resist degradation in environments with exposure to water and low pH (,4 pH) and high pH (>9 pH). When combined with the revetment mat this will yield a high tenacity, low elongating, and continuous filament polypropylene fibers that is securely cast into and embedded within the base of the concrete blocks and obtains connection strength greater than that of the geogrid. Ensure the geogrid meets the requirements of Table 1:

Underlayment Materials. Includes 5-Pick Leno Weave Fabric, Curlex® II and Recyclex TRM-V, or approved equivalent. The backing material shall be packaged within the roll of the concrete matting.

Leno Weave Five-Pick Netting: This is a woven, white polypropylene netting that provide added strength and support to the underlayments.

Curlex® II erosion control blanket (ECB) consists of a specific cut of naturally seed free Great Lakes Aspen curled wood excelsior with 80% six-inch fibers or greater fiber length. It is of consistent thickness with fibers evenly distributed throughout the entire area of the blanket. The top and bottom of each blanket is covered with degradable polypropylene netting.

Recyclex® TRM– V is a permanent non-degradable Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM), consists of 100% post-consumer recycled polyester (green or brown bottles) with 80% five-inch fibers or greater fiber length. It is of consistent thickness with fibers evenly distributed throughout the entire area of the TRM. The top and bottom of each TRM is covered with heavy duty polypropylene net. Fibers are tightly crimped and curled to allow fiber interlock, and to retain 95% memory of the original shape after loading by hydraulic events.

Fibers have a specific gravity greater than 1.0; therefore, the blanket will not float during hydraulic events.

Recyclex TRM – V meets Federal Government Executive Order initiatives for use of products made from, or incorporating, recycled materials. Recyclex TRM – V shall be manufactured in the USA and the fibers shall be made from 100a% recycled post-consumer goods.

Cover the mat or otherwise protect it during long periods of storage to protect against degradation of the backing material as recommended by the manufacturer. Mats will be rolled for shipment and are packaged with handling straps. These handling straps shall only be used for lifting below 2 ft. to place heavy duty lifting straps under rolls. Upon delivery, rolls may be left exposed for up to 30 days. If exposure will exceed 30 days, cover or tarp the rolls to minimize UV exposure. All mats to be inspected upon delivery. Assure that all units are sound and free of defects that would interfere with the proper placing of the unit or impair the strength or permanence of the construction.

Chipping or missing concrete resulting in a weight loss exceeding 15% of the average weight of a concrete unit is grounds for rejection by the County. Replace, repair or patch the damaged areas per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS

Alternative products may be considered if composition matches the materials detailed herein. Such products must be pre-approved in writing by the Engineer prior to bid date. Alternative product packages must be submitted to the Engineer a minimum of fifteen (15) days prior to bid date. Submittal packages for alternate products must include, as a minimum, the following:

Anchoring Devices:

A. Earth Percussion Anchors with a minimum drive depth to be specified with the engineer are used to provide for permanent tie down of the surface protection material in locations specified in the drawings.

B. The Earth Percussion Anchor components shall be made of materials suitable to resist corrosion and UV degradation particularly at the soil/air interface, and strategically selected to achieve an expected design life as specified by the engineer.

C. The anchor head shall have smooth edges and shaped in a bullet like configuration with the driving end tapering to a rounded point, minimizing abrasion and installation damage to the surface protection material.

D. The top load bearing plate shall have openings allowing vegetative growth through the plate and protrude only about 7mm above the surface of the mat after installation. The plate shall also include a recessed cavity so that the cable can be cut below the plate surface.

E. The top load bearing plate shall have a locking mechanism consisting of a corrosion resistant pressure die cast zinc alloy with internal a ceramic roller & directional locking device.

F. The Tendon shall be zinc aluminum galvanized steel wire rope that is compatible with the top bearing plate in terms of wire rope diameter and the manufacturer can guarantee the wire rope is suitable for use with

G. For quality control purposes and warranty claims, Earth Percussion Anchors should be delivered to the jobsite fully assembled and ready for installation, and meet the following requirements:

* Anchor performance is a function of in situ soil strength and therefore the load range in this specification should be regarded as a guide only. Site specific soil conditions shall be evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to determine the anchor type, depth, and pattern to resist slope instability. Pre-construction pull tests may be recommended.

Preparation:

A. Grade and compact areas to be treated with Earth Percussion Anchor’s (compacted as indicated or as directed by Engineer).

B. Prior to installation of any components related to the Earth Percussion Anchor system, a pre-installation meeting may be held with the Contractor, Installer, and a manufacturer’s representative. The meeting shall be scheduled by the Contractor with at least two weeks notice.

Installation:

A. During the initial installation, the Contractor may arrange for a representative of the EA manufacturer to conduct at least one day of training at the project site to demonstrate correct installation procedures for all components of the system. It is recommended that the engineer be present to better understand the proper installation procedures.

B. Measure and mark the proper pattern and positions of the EA. Install anchors using proper tools and as shown in drawings or as directed by manufacturer. Use the appropriate drive rod, to drive the anchor system into the soil surface. The EA should be driven to a depth such that after the anchor is load locked, it resides at the minimum design depth.

C. Remove the drive rod from the anchor head. Using the manufacturer’s appropriate tool, load-lock the anchor into its full working position by applying a load to the wire tendon.

D. Using the manufacturer’s tools, push the load bearing plate tight against the surface. Set the securing component and ensure load plate is tight against the surface.

E. Cut off excess tendon and discard (or leave a percentage of them in place as directed by the engineer for future random load testing).

F. Test and record pull out resistance of some percentage of installed EAs with the manufactures recommend load cell as directed in specifications, or by on-site Engineer.
