About this file

Thompson State Fish Hatchery Project Summary

This file comprises the specifications and supporting documents for the Thompson State Fish Hatchery improvements project in Michigan, managed by HDR, Inc. on behalf of the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The project encompasses construction of multiple systems and facilities including incubation chilling systems, oxygen distribution and dissolution equipment, water flow meters, bulk material feeders, aquaculture aeration systems, pumping equipment, flap valves, globe valves, and associated infrastructure for a new Cool Water Facility and incubation building. The scope includes both a base bid and multiple deductive alternates, with specifications detailing equipment manufacturers, performance requirements, installation procedures, and testing protocols. The project site comprises approximately 1,500 feet by 900 feet near Thompson, Michigan, with construction activities including new ponds, kettles, buildings, piping, paving, and earthwork. Geotechnical investigations were completed in April 2017 and October 2018, with boring data and soil classifications documented across sixteen to seven borings at various depths to support foundation design and construction planning.

The specifications establish detailed technical requirements for equipment procurement and installation, including acceptable manufacturers for critical systems such as positive displacement blowers, inline centrifugal pumps, septic pumping systems, and various valves and meters. Pricing is structured through unit specifications with individual section requirements rather than a consolidated cost summary in the provided documents. Key environmental and construction considerations identified include shallow groundwater levels ranging from 0.7 to 10 feet below surface, fine-grained frost-susceptible soils requiring careful management, and dewatering requirements during construction. Soil bearing capacity is rated at 2,000 pounds per square foot for foundation design, with total settlement estimates not exceeding three-quarters of an inch. Contractor responsibilities include equipment testing, startup procedures, operator training, and demonstration of system functionality prior to final acceptance, with all work to be performed in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable Michigan Department of Transportation standards.
