About this file
This specification document outlines the requirements for a universal testing machine to be procured by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Materials division as a rebid opportunity available to all vendors. The equipment will replace an outdated testing machine currently used to evaluate small diameter pipe, epoxy cylinders, wall drain, reflectors, fiber board, and other miscellaneous materials. The testing machine must feature a rigid dual column frame design with loading plates suitable for compression testing of pipe up to 10 inches in diameter, standard flat and v-grips for tensile testing, and a minimum load capacity of 100 kilonewtons. The machine must support a crosshead speed range from 0.001 millimeters per minute to 500 millimeters per minute with a minimum vertical test space of 800 millimeters to accommodate multiple-speed segmented testing for stiffness and flattening requirements.
The testing machine must include a long-travel extensometer with optical or clip-on capability for 200-millimeter gauge-length measurements with accuracy of 0.5 percent or better, and a high-precision strain-gauge load cell with accuracy to within 0.5 percent of full scale or better. The equipment must feature computer-controlled operation with servo or hydraulic drive capability, real-time monitoring software, and automated data acquisition and calculations for yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, modulus, and pipe stiffness properties. The machine shall operate on standard 120-volt power supply and must comply with ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695 test methods, as well as relevant AASHTO standards. Safety requirements include overload protection, emergency stop functionality, limit switches, and a safety enclosure to protect operators from pipe shrapnel.

Specifications for small diameter pipe testing machine
Purpose:
This purchase will be to replace an outdated universal testing machine used to test small diameter pipe, epoxy cylinders, wall drain, reflectors, fiber board, and other miscellaneous materials
General Requirements:
Testing Machine A properly calibrated universal testing machine capable of constant rate-of-crosshead movement type meeting the requirements of Test Method ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695.
Machine software and computer, if required, shall be included
Frame Type Rigid dual column design
Loading plates machine loading plates shall be appropriate size for compression testing of small diameter pipe up to 10 inches
Grips and Fixtures Standard flat and v-grips used for tensile testing
Power supply preferably standard 120v
Load Capacity Min 100 kN
Long Travel Extensometer Optical or clip on extensometer designed for long-gage length measurement of 200 mm, accuracy of ± 0.5% or better of gauge length, Test Speed/Crosshead speed 0.001mm/min to 500 mm/min. Machine shall be capable of conducting a multiple speed segmented test to meet the needs of stiffness and flattening requirements of plastic pipe specimens
Crosshead Travel minimum 800 mm of vertical test space
Load Cell & displacement High-precision strain-gauge load cell, accuracy to within ±0.5% of full scall or better.
Displacement/extension measurement with fine resolution of 0.001mm or better.
Test Modes must support tension and compression
Data acquisition & Control Computer- Controlled operation (servo or Hydraulic drive), with software for real-time monitoring, data collection, Force-displacement (or stress-strain) curves, and automatic calculations of properties (yield strength, Ultimate tensile strength, Elongation, Modulus, and pipe stiffness)
Compliance with Standards Should support standard test methods appropriate for construction materials (Tensile and Compressive testing) and be compatible with relevant ASTM and AASTHO test standards
Safety & Overload protection Overload protection, emergency stop, limit switches and safety enclosure to protect user from pipe shrapnel
