About this file
The document is a Special Events Outdoor Toilets Information Sheet focusing on portable toilet requirements for public events, specifically addressing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. The document provides comprehensive recommendations for portable sanitation units (PSUs) at various types of events, outlining minimum requirements for toilet and handwashing facilities based on event attendance, demographics, and duration. The guidelines specify that at least one wheelchair-accessible unit should be provided for every 20 regular restrooms, with a minimum of one toilet per 100 daily visitors, increasing to six toilets per 100 visitors for overnight events.
The information sheet details specific toilet allocation strategies based on event characteristics such as crowd composition, alcohol consumption, and anticipated attendance. Key considerations include the event's duration, crowd type, weather conditions, ticketing status, and potential staggered finish times. The document provides detailed tables and calculations to help event organizers determine appropriate portable toilet and handwashing station quantities, with specific recommendations for events with different gender distributions and alcohol consumption. These guidelines are intended to serve as a flexible framework for event planners when local regulations do not provide explicit guidance, emphasizing that additional facilities can improve overall event management.

Text version
Special Events Outdoor Toilets Information Sheet The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that at least five percent of a single user portable toilet cluster at a single location be wheelchair-accessible (mathematically this equates to roughly 1 wheelchair-accessible unit for every 20 regular restrooms for public events).
The use of portable toilets shall meet the following minimum requirements:
1. An adequate number of portable toilets shall be provided, but in no case shall the number of portable toilets be less than one toilet per one hundred (100) visitors per day for day use, and six toilets per one hundred (100) visitors per day if overnight use is included.
2. Portable hand washing facilities shall be provided with all portable toilets used for serving visitors or the public.
For Special Events for which there are no permanent toilet facilities, PSUs should be provided as follows.
.1 For a typical distribution of men, women and children, there must be 1 toilet for every 300 people.
.2 For an Event attended primarily by women and children there should be 1 toilet for every 200 people.
.3 For an even distribution of men and women at an event where alcoholic beverages are served, there should be 1 toilet for every 240 people.
"Special Events Contingency Planning" Toilets
The following considerations will determine the number of toilets to be provided for particular events:
• Duration of the event,
• Type of crowd,
• Weather conditions,
• Whether the event is pre-ticketed and numbers known or unticketed,
• Whether finishing times are staggered if the event has multi-functions, and
• Whether alcohol will be consumed.
Calculating the number of toilets required for an event is a matter for conjecture. Where local laws or regulations do not exist, the following guidelines can be applied. Better management of events can be achieved by providing additional facilities. Assume a 50/50 male/female split unless otherwise advised. The following tables should only be used as a guide.
