About this file

This Commercial Item Description (CID) details specifications for an Extended Cold Weather (ECW) Balaclava Hood for military personnel. The Type II hood is a multi-fabric design available in Small/Medium and Large/X-Large sizes, constructed using three separate materials: a synthetic fiber shell with durable water-repellent finish, a lofted insulation liner, and a knit front panel with fleece backing. Key technical requirements include specific weight ranges, stretch percentages, air permeability, dimensional stability, and color matching standards. The hood is designed to be worn over the nose or under the chin, with an adjustable face opening, bartack securing points, and binding tape around the edges. The entire hood must be Coyote 498 color and meet rigorous visual and dimensional inspection criteria.

The document specifies comprehensive testing requirements, including toxicity tests to ensure skin compatibility, and details packaging, labeling, and marking instructions. Intended for male and female military personnel operating in cold weather environments, the balaclava must conform to detailed physical and performance specifications. The General Services Administration has authorized use of this Commercial Item Description by all Federal Agencies, with potential procurement managed through Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Troop Support. Manufacturers must ensure the hood matches commercial marketplace products and can provide certificates of compliance upon request.
