The Microhardness Testing Machine shall meet the following criteria:
A. Microindentation Hardness Testing of Metallic Materials Machine with the following salient characteristics:
Note – terms and language used in this specification is based on the concepts and terminology from the following ASTM standards:
ASTM E384 Standard Test Method for Microindentation Hardness of Materials.
ASTM E10 Standard Test Method for Brinell Hardness of Metallic Materials.
ASTM E140 Standard Hardness Conversion Tables for Metals Relationship Among
Brinell Hardness, Vickers Hardness, Rockwell Hardness, Superficial hardness, Knoop Hardness, Scleroscope Hardness, and Leeb Hardness.
SAE J417 Hardness Tests and Hardness Number Conversions
A. Machine Requirements:
The MTMM Machine shall be new, not refurbished, and calibrated during installation at DLA as part of the purchase.
The Manufacturer shall have been in production of the quoted machine, or similar technology test machine for at least 3 years prior to the quote being offered.
Power requirement: 100-240 V 60 Hz 3 phase voltage requirements (preferable 110 V 60 Hz).
MTMM must be equipped to provide for the following requirements:
1. The MTMM system must be computer controlled.
2. It must be able to test the hardness of properly prepared metal samples with the Vickers, Knoop, and Brinell (1, 2.5, 5 mm ball) hardness scales.
3. The applied load range must include (at a minimum) – Vickers, Knoop, Brinell hardness scale ranges of testing.
4. Test forces applied must be in the range of 0.25-gram force to 62.5-kilogram force.
5. Certified indenters included must be capable of generating indentations that meet requirements for readings on the Vickers, Knoop and Brinell (1, 2.5, 5 mm ball) hardness scales.
6. The test machine shall be manufactured to be capable of making and determining
Material Hardness tests according to ASTM A384, ASTM E10, ASTM E92:
7. It must be able to be verified using certified hardness test blocks for any of the scales listed in the ASTM specifications above, and specifically for the following hardness scales and ranges:
a. Vickers (77 to 940),
b. Knoop (87 to 920),
c. Brinell (3.18 to 650 HBW, with 1, 2.5, 5 mm ball indenters).
8. It must provide controlled force application to the metal samples (i.e., by load-cell, closed-loop controlled sensors), or other equivalent means.
9. Controlling and supporting at least 2 indenters and 2 or more objective lenses in a turret or other integrated mechanism to permit indentations to be made in the sample(s) and observation of indentations through the objective lenses with a common force application/light path.
10. It must provide a supporting base for the test specimen, and indenter control into the specimen under the selected test force.
11. It must have a light optical microscope to select the desired test locations and to measure the size of the indentations produced by the test.
12. Force application – the time from initial application until full force is reached shall not exceed 10 secs. Indenter velocity must be 15-70 µm/s. Force dwell time must be between 10-15 secs.
13. A semi-automatic controlled system with an automated X-Y table is required. The sample mounting base should be mounted so that various sample mounting vises or platforms can be quickly and easily removed/installed depending on the sample size/shape.
14. Round Metallographic mounts of samples are the “primary” type of sample to be tested, but unmounted samples should also be able to be tested with sample holders available by the manufacturer that easily connect to the testing base/system.
15. “Docking station” options, or “Hot swapping” of “detectable/system recognizable” sample holders is required.
16. The machine/instrument must provide high quality objective lenses, with adjustable illumination intensity and highly accurate 3-dimensional alignment.
17. A method for auto-sensing collision of the sample with an indenter or objective is required.
18. The focused image should be projected on (captured by) a CCD camera that can display the image on a monitor and copied (saved) digitally for reporting purposes.
19. Objective lenses that provide final image magnifications of 100X and 500X are required, but other magnifications including 200x, 400x are desirable.
20. It must have an integral high quality digital camera. A minimum resolution of 10MP is required for capturing the sample photos of the testing pattern area.
21. An “overview” or sample viewing camera is also required for more complete final test reporting quality of a lower magnification view of the sample. Five (5) MP is required as the minimum resolution.
22. It shall be capable of performing accurate hardness tests and calculate conversions of tested values to the common hardness scales listed in ASTM E140 and SAE J417. The scales must include, but not be limited to: Vickers, Brinell (ball diameters of 1, 2.5, 5 mm), and Rockwell Scales (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, 15N, 30N, 45N, 15T, 30T, 45T).
23. Final Reporting capabilities are a high priority. User-adaptable templates for final reports are required. The ideal system will have intuitive indentation pattern generation and modification. The system shall be operator adjustable, flexible, and able to change indentation placement according to ASTM E384 spacing requirements as well as permit simple addition or deletion of pattern location points by the user.
