DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
73th Air Base Wing (AFMC)
Robins Air Force Base, Georgia
30 November 2000
MEMORANDUM FOR WR-ALC/EMPH
FROM: 78 AMDS/SGPB
SUBJECT: Radioactive content of Ah03 (Alumina) for Abrasive Cleaning
1. The Abrasive Blast shop (WR-ALC/TINMP A) in Bldg. 142, Robins AFB is supplied with alumina abrasive cleaning media by the Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corp.
According to the supplier, its alumina contains radioactive material originating from, "traces of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes of uranium, thorium and potassium found in nearly all geological materials."
2. On 13 Nov 00, the Air Force Institute for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health Risk Analysis I Radiation Surveillance Division measured the specific activity of used alumina abrasive cleaning media from Rolloff #5661 as follows:
U-238 - 7.9 pCi/g Th-232 - 12 pCi/g Ra-228 - 11.8 pCi/g Ra-226 - 16.2 pCi/g
The specific activities of the U-238 and Th-232 in the used alumina media are consistent with those in unused alumina media. The two radium (Ra) isotopes are natural decay products ofU-238 and Th-232.
3. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in 49 CFR 173.403 defines radioactive material as having a specific activity of at least 0. 002 microcuries per gram (2000 pCi/g). Therefore, Rolloff#5661 is not considered radioactive material under U.S.
DOT regulations.
