Locations

Blue areas are where asbestos is known to be present.

Notes

Asbestos fiber is present between the marble fireplace surrounds and the fireboxes in the fireplaces located in

Olmstead’s quarters. Based on visual inspection, it does not appear to be present in other similar locations along the gorge wall. A photo of the fireplace in Colonel Brown’s Quarters (located on the north side of the gorge wall) is included as a reference for the typical appearance and structure of the other mantles in the fort.

North Fireplace

This fireplace also has mortar covered asbestos-containing fiber in the liner between the firebox and the marble surround.

Fireplace in Colonel Brown’s Quarters (west wall)

This format and wooden surround/mantle is typical of all fireplaces along the gorge wall other than those in

Olmstead’s Quarters. Note the exposed brick firebox, which is different than that of the fireplaces in Olmstead’s

Quarters where the asbestos is located behind the marble fire surrounds.

Note the lack of material between the mantle/surround and the firebox.
