About this file

This is a federal construction specification document for metal panel repairs at Building 20 and 24, specifically addressing flashing and sheet metal work under Section 07600.

The specification requires prefinished sheet metal materials at 24 gauge thickness with a white fluoropolymer coating containing 70% polyvinylidene (PVF2) resin applied to one side at 10±0.1 mil total dry film thickness, with a 0.3–0.4 mil wash coat on the unfinished side. Materials must comply with referenced standards including ASTM A 666 (stainless steel), ASTM B 209 (aluminum), ASTM D 2822 (asphalt roof cement), and SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual. The work encompasses metal counter flashing, coping caps, scuppers, conductors, downspouts, and miscellaneous sheet metal accessories. Shop drawings showing layout, profiles, methods of joining, and anchorage details require government approval prior to fabrication. Installation requirements include flat-lock seams for nonmoving joints, expansion joints with intermeshing hooked flanges at maximum 10-foot spacing for runs exceeding 15 feet, and anchor spacing not exceeding 18 inches on center. Flashing installed in reglets or saw cuts must be secured with lead wedges spaced at 8 inches maximum on center, and all saw cuts must be completely filled with sealant. Underlayment consisting of red rosin paper and minimum 6-mil polyethylene film is required for installation directly on cementitious or wood substrates. Miscellaneous materials include bituminous coating (SSPC Paint 12), polyisobutylene mastic sealant, elastomeric sealant, metal fasteners matching the base material, and roofing cement per ASTM D 2822.

1.4 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Sheet metalwork shall be accomplished to form weathertight construction without waves, warps, buckles, fastening stresses or distortion, and shall allow for expansion and contraction. Cutting, fitting, drilling, and other operations in connection with sheet metal required to accommodate the work of other trades shall be performed by sheet metal mechanics. Installation of sheet metal items used in conjunction with roofing shall be coordinated with roofing work to permit continuous roofing operations.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS

Coordinate work of this section with interfacing and adjoining work for proper sequencing of each installation. Ensure best possible weather resistance and durability of work and protection of materials and finishes.

1.6 DELIVERY, HANDLING, AND STORAGE

Package and protect materials during shipment. Uncrate and inspect materials for damage, dampness, and wet-storage stains upon delivery to the job site. Remove from the site and replace damaged materials that cannot be restored to like-new condition. Handle sheet metal items to avoid damage to surfaces, edges, and ends. Store materials in dry, weather-tight, ventilated areas until immediately before installation.
