Statement of Need (SON)

The Statement of Need is required for all product orders over $15,000. The statement describes the labs goals and how the purchase of the goods or services will advance those goals.

1. Project Title

EchoMRI-A130

2. Statement of Need and Objectives

The NHLBI Mouse Phenotyping Core (MPC) requires the EchoMRI-A130 system to measure lean mass, fat mass, free water, and total body water in live mice in support of intramural metabolic and cardiovascular research. The MPC's current EchoMRI unit is over 17 years old, is experiencing recurring hardware and computer-connectivity failures, and has reached the end of its serviceable life. Continued reliance on the aging system places active studies at risk of unplanned downtime, lost data, and compromised longitudinal datasets.

The EchoMRI-A130 uses quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) to produce accurate, reproducible body composition measurements in conscious, unanesthetized animals in under two minutes per subject. Replacement with the A130 is necessary to:

• Maintain uninterrupted body composition phenotyping services for MPC investigators and their active protocols.

• Preserve the integrity and comparability of body composition data collected on the EchoMRI platform over the past 17 years, which is required for ongoing longitudinal studies and cross-study analyses.

• Support future metabolic and cardiovascular studies that depend on high-precision, non-invasive body composition measurement in mouse models with body masses ranging from neonatal to adult obese phenotypes (up to 130 g).

• Enable whole-organ and tissue-sample composition analysis via the EchoMRI A10 insert antenna/probe.

3. Product Specifications/Features/Salient Characteristics

The EchoMRI-A130 shall provide the following:
