C.0 NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
The National Park Service (NPS) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) that has been entrusted with the care of our national parks since 1916. The National Park System currently has 433 units (often referred to as parks), covering more than 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories.
The NPS also has more than 150 related areas that are linked in importance and purpose to places managed directly by the National Park Service by preserving important segments of the nation's natural and cultural heritage. They are designated by acts of Congress or by the Secretary of the Interior (affiliated areas). The majority of related areas are not units of the National Park Service and are managed by other government agencies or non-government organizations and landowners. The National Park Service is involved in related areas by directly managing the entire or sections of a related area, or by providing technical or financial assistance.
The NPS preserves unimpaired natural and cultural resources, and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

C.1 HOPEWELL FURNACE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site showcases an early American landscape of industrial operations from 1771 – 1883, Hopewell and other iron plantation laid the foundation for the transformation of the United States into an industrial giant for the time. The park’s 848 acres and historic structures illustrate the business, technology, and lifestyle of our growing nation.
For more information, please visit HOFU’s website at: https://www.nps.gov/hofu/index.htm
C.2 BACKGROUND
The historic orchard at Hopewell Furnace is unique in that all the apples are heritage varieties original to the inhabitants of Hopewell.
There are roughly 150 trees throughout the Upper, middle and lower orchards and they require consistent annual care. The timeline for care of the orchard starts in early February when we start assessing the level of pruning the trees need. Shortly after pruning is complete, the orchard is top-dressed with a thin layer of compost. Immediately following you begin to see silver tips which is when the first application of spraying begins. Miscible oil and kocide are the active ingredients. A second application of miscible oil and kocide is applied when you start to see green (late green/early bud break stage). Two more applications are made at mid-bloom when petals fall.
These two sprayings use Agrimycin and mancozeb. The above treatments are based on proven history to treat cedar apple rust, fire blight and leaf blight. This spray schedule is approximate and ultimately is based on the weather and temperatures.
