Document Title Wayside Exhibit Planning, Design, Fabrication, and Installation Piscataway Park

1.0 BACKGROUND

Piscataway Park is one of the nation’s earliest public-private preservation achievements. In the 1950s, local residents saw that encroaching urban development threatened the natural view from Mount Vernon. To preserve the view and open space seen from George Washington’s home, Piscataway Park was established in 1961. The park contains three main areas: the National Colonial Farm, the remains of Marshall Hall, and Piscataway Park. The National Colonial Farm and Marshall Hall area highlight the land-use history of settlers from the colonial era. Piscataway Park also preserves the heritage of the Piscataway people. The site was the center of the Piscataway chiefdom which was spread throughout southern Maryland. As a sacred part of their homeland, the area is still important to the Piscataway people. It is a place where they gather to celebrate their heritage and pass on traditions to the next generation. Within its current boundaries, Piscataway Park encompasses approximately 5,000 acres and stretches for six miles from Piscataway Creek to Marshall Hall on the Potomac River and is located approximately 30 minutes south of Washington, D.C. Visitors can walk the park trails, go fishing, and enjoy bird watching as they experience the forests and wetlands similar to the landscape of Washington’s time.

Nearby to Piscataway Park is Greenbelt Park. With its close vicinity to the nation’s capital, Greenbelt Park is a respite for locals to access hiking, camping, and picnicking opportunities.

Washingtonians and visitors from around the world are drawn to the urban oasis of Greenbelt Park for its recreational opportunities.

Under this project, Piscataway Park is seeking to have a contractor plan, design, fabricate, and install new waysides for its site and nearby Greenbelt Park. Both parks are administered by National Capital Parks-East. Visitors to these parks explore them primarily through the outdoors.

New waysides are the best way to reach visitors and connect them with the natural and cultural histories of the area. Through trailheads and safety messages, we can also help visitors make informed decisions about their experiences.
