About this file
This document is a site-specific Environmental Management System (EMS) Awareness Training presentation for Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (SJAFB) in North Carolina. The training provides comprehensive guidance on the base's environmental management approach, focusing on ISO 14001 (2015) standards. Key elements include defining an EMS as a continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing, and improving environmental processes, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance, pollution prevention, and organizational environmental goals.
The presentation outlines the EMS cycle, which includes planning (identifying environmental aspects and impacts), implementation (establishing operational controls and procedures), checking (assessing compliance and monitoring performance), and review (leadership progress evaluation). The training emphasizes that environmental stewardship is a responsibility for all base community members, with potential consequences for non-conformance including adverse environmental effects, regulatory violations, punitive fines, and potential legal action. The base's high-priority environmental aspect is improving the management of oil/water separators, with five separators currently in the improvement plan.

ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
SITE-SPECIFIC TRAINING
WHAT IS AN EMS?
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is:
A continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing and improving the processes and actions that an organization undertakes to meet its organizational and environmental goals.
A framework that allows an organization to consistently control the effects its operations or processes may have on the environment and to continually improve its operating procedures.
WHY USE AN EMS?
Through the establishment of an EMS, Seymour Johnson AFB will reduce mission impacts on the environment while maintaining a high level of regulatory compliance.
Following an EMS will save time, money and valuable natural resources that can not be easily replaced.
The Department of Defense has mandated that all Air Force installations implement and comply with an EMS.
ISO 14001
The Air Force has adopted ISO 14001 (2015) as the model for the development of an EMS at each installation. ISO 14001 was developed by the International Organization For Standardization, which is a non-profit entity that provides state of the art specifications to make industry more efficient and effective. ISO 14001 is the standard that sets guidelines for environmental management.
The ISO 14001 model utilizes a continual cycle of planning, implementing, checking and reviewing to improve environmental performance.
THE EMS CYCLE
The EMS Cycle occurs in the following order:
Planning Phase - Environmental aspects and impacts are identified and environmental goals are established, based on an organizations mission.
Implementation Phase - Operational controls and written procedures are put in place and training is provided.
Checking Phase - Compliance and management systems are assessed, performance measures are monitored, and corrective actions are taken.
Review Phase - Leadership performs progress reviews and takes the required actions to improve the established EMS Cycle.
KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL EMS
Top leadership must commit to making the environment an organizational priority
There must be a focus on continual improvement, learning from mistakes, and preventing similar problems in the future
Organizations must remain flexible and maintain the ability to quickly adapt to a dynamic environment
Employees must remain aware and involved in implementing changes for improvement and reducing unwanted environmental impacts
ACTIVITIES
Activities offer the greatest opportunity to impact the environment. They are work processes performed everyday and are more prevalent than services and products. Some examples of activities include:
Driving to work Disposing of waste Changing oil in vehicles Preparing jet engines Training air crews Printing documents
ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
An Environmental Aspect is any element of an organization’s activities, products or services that can interact with and/or impact the environment.
Paper consumption Energy consumption Waste generation Storm water runoff Hazardous materials usage
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
An environmental impact is defined as any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, resulting from the unit’s functional mission or activities. Examples of environmental impacts include the following:
Health and safety exposure Use of landfill space Use of natural resources Generation of non-hazardous waste Hearing impairment
SJAFB’s HIGH PRIORITY ASPECTS
The environmental programs on Seymour Johnson AFB have been scored and ranked based on the number of aspects and potential for significant impacts.
SJAFB has chosen to Improve the Management of Oil/Water Separators by focusing attention on the need to eliminate unnecessary oil/water separators and repair or replace inadequate oil/water separators that remain in service.
Currently, there are 5 oil/water separators remaining in the improvement plan.
