Sheffield Site Maintenance

BACKGROUND:

The Sheffield Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility requires routine maintenance to ensure that the Site is in proper condition. If the clay cap is not maintained, surface water will enter the trenches and cause migration of the radioactive waste to an off-site receptor, causing an undue dose to the public and environment.

A civil survey of the Sheffield Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility clay cap is required every four to six years to determine its integrity and whether or not subsidence is occurring. The cap was put in place to stop water infiltration which causes leaching of buried radioactive waste to move offsite.

Site is located at US Ecology Illinois, Inc., 13279-350 East Street, Sheffield, IL 61361.

· Quarterly radsite/buffer zone inspection reports shall be prepared and submitted to the Agency on a quarterly basis, in January, April, July, and October.
