School of Professional and Area Studies Overview
Nine Divisions, including the Center for the Study of the Conduct of Diplomacy
Courses are offered through classroom, distance, and blended learning formats
Training incorporates interactive and experiential learning to the maximum extent possible
SPAS provides professional tradecraft courses to all categories of Department personnel
SPAS training includes courses for Management, Consular, Public Diplomacy, Political, Economic/Commercial, and Office Management professionals

interests and tackle the evolving challenges of 21st-century diplomacy by providing superior job-specific orientation, tradecraft, and area studies training.
Current LMS Use
LMS is not used consistently across the SPAS training divisions in support of classroom and online learning.
LMS is used primarily as content resource:
eHomerooms for links and downloadable documents
Access to Distance Learning courses
LMS is under-utilized: training divisions have yet to fully incorporate functionality. SharePoint is an alternative to document access in support of classroom or online training
SPAS courses have turned to third party applications for course functions (e.g. evaluation, document storage, etc.)
SPAS has investigated how current LMS can be adapted for blended learning (e.g. gamification, badging, dashboards, etc.)
A Flexible Virtual Classroom Environment
Easy to set up and maintain by the instructor or course coordinator
Easy for students to access from any location using a variety of devices
(desktop, tablet, mobile)
