3.02 INSTALLATION:
B. General: Steel posts shall be used for end-panel, corner-panel, brace panel, or gate-panel.
Drive steel posts.
C. Driving Posts:
Steel T-Posts: Drive into the ground to the depth shown on the drawings or until the anchor plate is slightly below the ground surface. Posts shall be driven plumb. When rock formations prevent driving remove anchor plate and excavate or drill holes a minimum of 18 inches deep for t-posts and 2 feet 6 inches for drill stem pipe posts. Drill holes can be slightly narrower than the diameter of the post and drive post into the ground.
D. Corner Post, Gate Post, Corner Panel, Brace, and End Panel (Stress Panel) Assemblies:
Fence Reconstruct/Repair 01 10 00 - 6
Construct as shown on the drawings or as staked in the field. Rock jacks can be minimally substituted for these items. Construct stress panels/ HBraces on crests of hills, and a maximum of 1,320 feet center-to-center for barbed wire sections. In addition, stress panels are required at points between which wire is to be stretched. Construct end panels at the end of fence and at gate locations unless shown otherwise on the drawings, or existing fence structures are in place.
E. Figure Fours and Rock Jacks: Are currently existing in the fence and may be re-utilized in many instances as designated on the maps. Figure fours can be used in lieu of steel posts as needed in rocky areas. Figure fours and rock jacks shall be constructed as shown on the drawings.
F. Wire: Stretch tightly and staple to wood posts or securely attach to steel posts with standard wire clips. Wire is properly stretched when it is springy to the touch. Drive staples into wood until the staple comes in contact with the wire against the post, but not so tight as to crimp the wire or prevent movement of the wire. Do not drive staples parallel to the grain of the wood. There is almost no wood in this fence. Some trees are located along the line and can be used as in line posts only. Terminate wire at each end post, gate post, corner post, or stress panel. Wrap wire around the post two times and tie off by wrapping around the incoming wire a minimum of four times. One stay will be placed between all t-posts and attached to the barbed wires only and the bottom smooth wire will not have the stay attached.
G. Brace Wire: Shall be double-looped and twisted tight.
H. Gates: Shall be installed according to the Work Data Sheet, the drawings, and as recommended by the manufacturer when applicable.
I. Mechanical Gate Closers: Line up the latch with the gate. Adjust latch assembly after installation so that the latch does not bind, and the gate hangs properly.
J. Clearing: Maximum clearing width is 4 feet on each side of the fenceline. Provide minimum disturbance to existing grass and sod. Most all fences do not need clearing due to burned area. There is 1.1 miles of fence that will need some clearing along the fence line.
3.03 DISPOSAL OF DEBRIS:
A. Requirements: Any items or materials found to be functional, and reusable may be reused in the repair or reconstruction. Items or debris not designated as salvage for the Government shall become the property of the Contractor. The Contractor shall be responsible for disposal of materials in a legal manner and for payment of any fees required. Burning of removed materials is not permitted on the work site.
