SBA Information Notice g

11/5/96

Set ExpDate"12/31/96" 12/31/96

TO:
All SBA Employees
CONTROL NO.:
9000-1227
SUBJECT:
Computer Security Reminder
EFFECTIVE:
9-21-00

This is a reminder that computer security is everyone’s responsibility. It’s really up to you, the individual users, to ensure the security and integrity of SBA’s data and Information Technology (IT) resources.

The good news is that practicing safe, secure computing is not at all difficult. It’s simply a matter of following a few common-sense rules:

· One of the most important things you must do is not share your ID and password with anyone. IDs and passwords are issued for your use only. There is never a legitimate reason to give your password to another person. If anyone does request your ID or password notify your supervisor and your information resource manager (IRM) immediately.

If you have to write down your password, keep it in a secured (locked) location. Don’t leave it in plain view or under a blotter or taped to the underside of a drawer.

· Don’t allow someone to use your system while logged in under your name. Remember, anything that’s done in that session has your name associated with it.

· Don’t leave your PC unattended while logged in. If you need to leave your desk, either log out or use a password protected screen saver. (Make sure that the screen saver you choose is a Windows 95 screen saver that can’t be bypassed by typing CTRL-ALT-DELETE. See your IRM or call the Help Desk at 202-205-6400 for more information on installing a screen saver.

· Be sure to log out and turn off your PC when you leave for the day. If you want to access your PC remotely using Secure Remote or Reachout, you should reboot your PC and leave it at the network login prompt before you leave for the day. Otherwise please be sure to turn it off.

Following these rules will help us to ensure the security and integrity of SBA’s data.

If you have any questions you may call Lewis Baskerville at (202) 401-1980 or the Help Desk at

(202)205-6400.
