About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for NASA Langley Research Center detailing the complete teardown, inspection, and rebuild of two Philadelphia Gear Model 3418CT industrial cooling tower gearboxes used in Cooling Tower Cells 1 & 2. The contractor must perform comprehensive disassembly and cleaning of all internal components and the gear casing, followed by visual and dimensional inspection. All reusable torque-transmitting components require Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to identify any operational distress indications. The contractor shall provide and install 100% new bearings, gearing, shafting, and seals manufactured to exact OEM specifications and tolerances, while evaluating the housing, hardware, and auxiliary lubrication components for integrity and reliability.
The contractor must conduct rigorous pre-shipment validation including a minimum 90-minute no-load, full-speed mechanical spin test to record operational temperature, sound, and vibration levels. Additional requirements include coating the gearbox exteriors with high-quality slate blue epoxy coating, applying internal rust preventative providing minimum six-month protection, and packaging/bolting the units to heavy-duty shipping skids for safe return transit. The contractor shall provide a three-year warranty covering the overhauled drives and OEM parts. All work shall be performed at the contractor's facility with complete overhaul and equipment return required within approximately 24 weeks after receipt of order and equipment. The Government will ship the gearboxes dry and drained to the contractor's location.
