About this file

This is a Sole Source Justification and Determination document from NASA's Shared Services Center authorizing single-source procurement from Anton Paar for an Autosorb 6100 high vacuum gas sorption analyzer. The estimated total cost is redacted, and the delivery lead time is 4-6 weeks after receipt of order.

The justification establishes that the Anton Paar Autosorb 6100 is the only instrument identified through market research that meets NASA's technical requirements for high-accuracy characterization of polymer aerogels and other highly porous materials. The system's unique capabilities include high-vacuum volumetric gas adsorption measurements for BET surface area analysis, pore size distribution, micropore analysis with exceptional sensitivity at very low relative pressures, TruZone active coolant level control, precision manifold temperature control, integrated multi-station degassing, PowderProtect technology for fine powders, and advanced standardized analysis methods. The document notes that selecting an alternative vendor would introduce significant technical, schedule, and cost risks, as competing instruments lack the required combination of high-vacuum sensitivity, low-pressure measurement capability, advanced micropore characterization, and automated sample protection. Additionally, alternative systems would create incompatibility with established testing procedures and historical datasets, potentially compromising long-term performance comparisons of NASA-developed polymer aerogels and affecting technology maturation and external research collaborations.

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION

NASA SHARED SERVICES CENTER

RECOMMENDATION AND DETERMINATION TO SOLICIT FROM ONE SOURCE

OR BRAND NAME

PICK ONE

Sole Source:

☒I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate with Anton Paar only for procurement of the Autosorb 6100 high vacuum gas sorption analyzer. The total estimated cost of this effort is and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is 4-6 weeks ARO.

OR

Brand Name Justification:

☐I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate only with vendors who can provide the subject band name from Manufacture Name for Enter Supply or Service to be procured. The total estimated cost of this effort is Enter Dollar amount and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is Date.

This recommendation is for the acquisition of supplies or services determined to be reasonably available from only one source/only one manufacture. Competition is impractical for the following reasons (please answer the questions below):

1. What are the reasons for soliciting only the suggested source/suggested brand name? Please provide the unique characteristics of the items or services along with the supporting rationale and the market research performed to substantiate your reason for the suggested source/brand name.

The Anton Paar Autosorb 6100 is the only instrument identified through market research that fully satisfies the technical requirements for high-accuracy characterization of NASA-developed polymer aerogels and other highly porous materials. The system provides high-vacuum volumetric gas adsorption measurements for BET surface area, pore size distribution, and micropore analysis with exceptional sensitivity at very low relative pressures, which is essential for accurately characterizing ultralow-density aerogel materials. Unique capabilities, including TruZone active coolant level control, precision manifold temperature control, integrated multi-station degassing, PowderProtect technology for fine powders, and advanced standardized analysis methods to ensure highly reproducible and reliable measurements across a broad range of porous materials.

2. What is the impact to the government if another vendor/brand is used? Include any dollar, schedule, or compatibility impacts if possible.

Selecting a different vendor or brand would introduce significant technical, schedule, and cost risks to

NASA's polymer aerogel research program. Alternative instruments do not provide the combination of high-vacuum sensitivity, low-pressure measurement capability, advanced micropore characterization, automated sample protection, and standardized analysis software required for accurate characterization of ultralow-density polymer aerogels. Other systems introduce incompatibility with established testing procedures and historical datasets would reduce confidence in long-term performance comparisons of

NASA-developed polymer aerogels, potentially affecting technology maturation, qualification activities, and collaboration with external research partners.
