About this file
This is a Statement of Work Attachment containing detailed specifications for the manufacture of two wooden light 6-pounder cannon travelling carriages for Saratoga National Historical Park. The carriages must be constructed as reproductions of the "Muller" pattern light 6-pounder travelling carriage, with all wood components fabricated from solid white oak and metal hardware made of forged or cast steel or ductile iron. Key structural components include the carriage body, trails/cheeks, wheels with wooden spokes and fellies, a metal axle and boxing assembly, and a wooden elevation coin/wedge. All small hardware must utilize stainless steel fasteners. Measurements are to be obtained through onsite inspection of existing replica carriages and architectural schematics, with a tolerance allowance of no more than 5% deviation from stated dimensions, except where such deviation would prevent secure fitting of the cannon barrel. The carriages must roll smoothly without obstruction or sticking points, and trunion caps must be hinged to allow cannon tube loading and unloading while remaining securely fastened to prevent tampering.
The exterior finish requirements specify that all metal components receive a white-colored high-performance oxide primer followed by two coats of black-colored semi-gloss rust-inhibiting paint, applied by brush or spray, while all wood components must be treated with a non-gloss preservation treatment. The specifications note that the elevation coin will be installed after the barrel is mounted and secured upon delivery. The project involves lumber milling to achieve proper thickness and the fabrication of metal hardware components, representing a specialized manufacturing effort requiring skilled craftsmanship in both woodworking and metalworking to meet historical reproduction standards.

· Carriages are in accord with the “Muller” pattern light 6-pounder travelling carriage. Measurements will be attainable via onsite inspection of extant replica carriages and architectural schematics.
· An allowance of no more than 5% is acceptable from stated dimensions, apart from any difference that prohibits a tight and secure fit of the cannon barrel to the carriage once assembled.
· Carriages must be able to roll without obstruction or sticking points.
· Trunion caps shall be hinged to allow for loading and unloading of cannon tube. Caps must be able to be securely fastened to prohibit tampering, but not permanently fixed or welded to inhibit removal of tube for servicing of carriage. This feature can be seen on extant carriages on display within the park.
Exterior Finish:
