About this file
This document specifies the salient characteristics for a 463L Pallet Scale, a specialized weighing system designed for military cargo operations.
The scale must accommodate a minimum platform dimension of 108 x 88 inches to seat standard HCU-6/E 463L master cargo pallets and feature an ultra-low-profile design (under 4 inches high) or flush pit-mount assembly to minimize ramp incline angles. The system requires a minimum gross structural weighing threshold of 15,000 to 20,000 pounds to safely process 10,000-pound maximum cargo loads plus forklift impact forces. The scale must incorporate at least 4 to 6 hermetically sealed shear-beam load cells for accurate weight computation even with off-center cargo, and include dual-sided weight indicator displays or high-visibility remote scoreboard displays. Automated data interfacing capabilities must output weight metrics directly via RS-232, USB, or Ethernet into military data networks such as the Global Air Transportation Execution System (GATES). The system must integrate dynamic tare functionality with dedicated memory presets to automatically subtract standard 463L tare weights (290 pounds for empty pallets, 355 pounds with complete net sets).
Additional requirements include NIST Handbook 44 compliance for legal-for-trade accuracy, tactical mobility casing with modular components for C-130 or C-17 aircraft deployment, non-slip diamond-tread or textured anti-slip surfacing, and secure floor anchoring via bolt-down brackets or pit-locking pins. The scale must meet ergonomic and safety standards including 1:12 maximum ramp slopes, high-visibility yellow safety borders, FM-approved or Class I Division 1 explosion-proof electronics for hazardous material environments, IP67 washdown protection with sealed junction boxes and stainless-steel electronics, chemical-resistant catalyzed epoxy paint coating for corrosion resistance, and operational functionality across extreme temperatures from -40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

463L Pallet Scale
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
Scale must meet or exceed the following salient characteristics:
• Over-Sized Weighing Surface: Employs a platform minimum dimension of 108 x 88 inches to perfectly seat a standard HCU-6/E 463L master cargo pallet.
• Low Profile Frame Layout: Uses an ultra-low-profile design (typically under 4 inches high) or flush pit-mount assembly to minimize the required ramp incline angle.
• Heavy-Duty Structural Capacity: Features a minimum gross structural weighing threshold of 15,000 to 20,000 pounds to safely process 10,000-pound maximum cargo loads plus forklift impact forces.
• Forklift Access Channels: Includes dedicated structural fork slots or reinforced drive-on areas designed to handle 10K tactical forklifts with 72-inch tins.
• Dual-Sided Weight Indicator: Features dual display readouts or high-visibility remote scoreboard displays visible from both sides of the cargo build-up area.
• Dynamic Tare Functionality: Integrates dedicated memory presets to subtract standard 463L tare weights automatically (290 pounds for empty pallets, 355 pounds with complete net sets).
• Automated Data Interfacing: Outputs weight metrics directly via RS-232, USB, or Ethernet into military data networks like the Global Air Transportation Execution System (GATES).
• Multi-Point Load Cell Array: Incorporates at least 4 to 6 hermetically sealed shear-beam load cells to accurately compute weights even with severely off-center cargo center-of-gravity profiles.
• NIST Handbook 44 Compliance: Built and calibrated to satisfy National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44 legal-for-trade accuracy benchmarks.
• Tactical Mobility Casing: Built with modular components that allow the entire system to be quickly broken down, loaded onto a 463L pallet, and deployed via C-130 or C-17 aircraft.
• Non-Slip Top Surfacing: Mandates a diamond-tread top plate or textured anti-slip coating to protect cargo handlers from slips and falls during wet conditions.
• Tripping Hazard Prevention: Requires high-visibility safety yellow borders painted along all platform edges and transitions to comply with floor hazard standards.
• Ergonomic Incline Gradients: Employs standard entry and exit approach ramps with slopes not exceeding a 1:12 rise ratio to prevent load-pushing injuries.
• Secure Floor Anchoring: Utilizes bolt-down frame brackets or pit-locking pins to prevent the scale assembly from walking or shifting under forklift impacts.
• Intrinsically Safe Electronics: Uses FM-approved or Class I, Division 1 explosion-proof indicators if situated in cargo facilities processing volatile or hazardous materials.
• IP67 Washdown Protection: Features sealed junction boxes and stainless-steel structural electronics to endure regular pressure-washing and outdoor flight line debris.
• Corrosion Resistant Coating: Utilizes sandblasted steel components coated in chemical-resistant, catalyzed epoxy paint to withstand aircraft deicing fluids and saltwater environments.
• Extreme Temperature Tolerance: Remains calibrated and functional across arctic and tropical swings ranging from -40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
