About this file

This technical specification section (26 29 21) details requirements for enclosed electrical switches and circuit breakers for the Upgrade UPS System project at the San Juan VA Medical Center. The document specifies technical and performance requirements for fused and unfused disconnect switches and circuit breakers rated up to 600 volts, including detailed provisions for switch characteristics such as quick-make/quick-break mechanisms, copper blades, arc chutes, external operating handles with lock-open padlocking, mechanical interlocks, and NEMA-classified enclosures. The specification covers switch types including General Duty (GD) for 240V and Heavy Duty (HD) for 480V systems, with requirements for horsepower ratings, fuse holders, ground lugs, and installation standards.

The specification provides comprehensive installation guidelines, including seismic anchoring requirements, fuse arrangement, and acceptance testing procedures. Contractors must submit shop drawings, technical manuals, and certifications demonstrating compliance with the specifications. The document references multiple standards from organizations like NEMA, NEC, and UL, and requires visual inspections, mechanical condition checks, and verification of electrical connections. Two weeks prior to final inspection, contractors must provide a complete set of spare fuses for each installed fused disconnect switch, to be delivered to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
