Specimen Transport Policy 1

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES Phoenix Indian Medical Center

Subject: Specimen Transport Policy

I. Purpose

This policy is written to ensure that specimens collected outside of the PIMC Laboratory are to be transported in proper containers or bags and delivered by hospital staff only.

II. Special Safety Precautions

Safety and assurance of infection control for personnel who transport patient specimens to the

PIMC Laboratory.

III. Procedure

Listed are the following steps that PIMC laboratory has taken to ensure the utilization of biohazard bags/containers in transport of patient specimens.

Step:

1. All biological specimens not collected by the Clinical Laboratory must be transported to the

Clinical Laboratory in a sealed biohazard bag.

2. All wards and clinics that collect and transport specimens such as urine, specimens for culture, iFOB cards, and body fluid specimens must be sealed in biohazard bag.

3. Blood specimen tubes not collected by Clinical Laboratory personnel must be transported to the Clinical Laboratory in a sealed biohazard bag.

4. The Clinical Laboratory will not accept any specimens that are not transported in a sealed biohazard bag.

5. Materials Management automatically stock biohazard bags for inpatient wards and ambulatory clinics. Biohazard bags are included on the Material Management supply order form for all units and departments that may order as needed.

IV. Implementation Plan

Supervisory Medical Technologist (Phlebotomy) and Laboratory Director/Manager are the sole custodians and are responsible for the implementation and review every two years of this policy per CAP Accreditation requirements.
