IP-2 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This contract is for the performance of all aspects of work necessary for the construction of a 2-inch asphalt concrete overlay with the concurrent construction of pre-level work. This work is being undertaken to improve ride quality and mitigate surface defects. This project includes the construction of four asphalt concrete driveway aprons where those driveways connect with the overlay.
This work is located on Bond Road, including the intersection with Mt. Hope. The overlay will be approximately 1,575 feet long (including taper joints), beginning at a point south of the intersection with Mount Hope Drive, and extending to a point near the driveway access to house number 33698.
Within the project site the Contractor shall place two pre-level courses, one over the other, of asphalt concrete on both the north- and southbound travel lanes. This work is intended to mitigate the felt ride due to a series of dips and bumps. The affected sections include approximately 990 feet in the southbound lane, and 1,070 feet in the northbound lane. The pre-level lengths may be adjusted at time of construction based on Contractor’s and County’s representatives’ evaluation of site conditions. Pre-level sections are north of the intersection with Mount Hope Drive.
The first pre-level course will vary from zero inches deep to approximately 2.5-inch deep to fill multiple dips in the road. The second pre-level course shall be a thin course, ‘breaking rock’ to ¾” depth as needed to further improve ride quality by levelling the remaining dips and scraping over high spots. high spots.
Contractor shall employ the use of an automatic screed control system utilizing an averaging device which may include ultra-sonic detectors, a contact ski, or other approved method.
Contractor may propose an alternative paving method after having first personally inspected the site, subject to County approval.
Asphalt concrete pavement for pre-level work is estimated for 185 tons. Actual quantities used at time of construction are expected to vary from this estimate.
Contractor shall subsequently place a 2-inch overlay as described above on both the north- and southbound travel lanes. The overlay length is intended to be 1,475 feet long by 24 feet wide.
Taper the overlay to feather joints at either end over a distance of 50 feet per each taper for a total section length of approximately 1,575 feet.
Asphalt concrete pavement for Bond Road overlay work is estimated for 452 tons.
The overlay shall extend from the edge of Bond Road east along Mt. Hope Drive for a distance of approximately 100 feet; 2 inches deep by approximately 26 feet wide. Taper the overlay to a feather joint at the end over a distance of 50 feet.
Asphalt concrete pavement for Mt. Hope Drive is estimated for 46 tons, including radii at intersection.
The intended beginning and end of the overlay sections are marked on site.
See next page for a sketch of the proposed work. This drawing is not to scale, and project extents shown are approximate only.
The primary aspects of the work include:
1. TRAFFIC CONTROL – The Contractor shall provide for traffic control in accordance with the most current edition of the Oregon Temporary Traffic Control Handbook. The Contractor shall provide signs, personnel, tools, and equipment as needed to safely manage traffic through the work zone during construction. Traffic delays shall be limited to no more than 20 minutes.
Contractor and/or Contractor’s traffic control supervisor shall meet with County prior to performing work at any location to review a traffic control plan for each location.
2. TEMPORARY PAVEMENT MARKINGS – Providing striping or other forms of permanent pavement markings is not a part of this work. Contractor shall install temporary reflective tape or stick ‘n stomps on the centerline of the finished wearing course. Tape shall be placed four inches wide by six inches long. Tape or stick ‘n stomps shall be yellow, placed every 40 feet on centerline of tangent sections, and every 20 feet on centerline of horizontal and vertical curves.
3. ASPHALT CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION – The Contractor shall furnish materials, personnel, tools, and equipment necessary for paving an overlay with pre-level.
Joints shall be tapered to a feather joint from 2 inches to zero over a distance of fifty feet.
Feather joints shall be hand raked, with fines added to create a smooth and uniform taper to the existing pavement surface. Feather joints shall be sand-sealed. Apply a torch to maintain temperature of asphalt mix while constructing feather joints
The longitudinal joint on successive lifts of asphalt concrete shall be offset by no less than six inches.
4. DRIVEWAYS - Where existing driveways abut the work to be performed, the Contractor shall pave to edge of right-of-way boundary, 10 ft. to 15 ft. as directed in the field by the County’s representative. Driveways will be paved 3-inches deep over gravel, or 2-inches deep over existing asphalt aprons, feathered to match grade. Leave a butt edge at the end of gravel driveways. Linn County forces will add rock for grade transitions.
Driveways are estimated at 4 tons over gravel, 3 tons over existing asphalt aprons.
5. SCOPE OF WORK CHANGES – The County may reduce or expand the scope of this work with no change to the quoted price per each pay item.
6. COORDINATION – The Contractor for this work shall coordinate with Linn County forces to ensure to the greatest extent possible the safety and convenience of the travelling public, and Contractor’s and County’s personnel.
The Contractor shall notify the County at least one week in advance of performing work at each intersection. Depending upon timing and availability, the County may deploy a Portable Changeable Message Sign (PCMS) to each location to forewarn the public of the pending work.
