Statement of Work
(SOW)
IPM Contract
Death Valley National Park (DEVA)
PROJECT BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Death Valley National Park is located in one of the hottest regions on earth. Often summer temperatures reach 120℉ during the day with lows above 100℉. In the park there are numerous species of cockroaches found in the park including the American cockroach, Periplaneta Americana which is common in the housing area. These insects are attracted by the availability of food and water in an otherwise harsh environment. Cockroaches cause a number of problems including contaminating food and eating utensils, as well as destroying fabric and paper products. Cockroaches can also impart stains and unpleasant odors to surfaces they contact. Diseases associated with cockroaches include Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. They have also been implicated it the spread of typhoid and dysentery. Indoor infestations are an important source of allergens and risk of asthma in some populations. The level of cockroaches and allergens is directly related to cockroach density and access to food and water. In addition, ants, including Argentine ants, Linepithema humile, are present in the housing and administrative areas. Like cockroaches, ants also spread disease.
