About this file
This document appears to be a questions and answers (Q&A) file related to a Request for Proposal (RFP) for neutron detector beam loss monitors. The key details are:
The RFP is for neutron detector beam loss monitors to be used by the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The detectors should be able to measure a neutron energy spectrum with an average between 1 and 5 MeV before the moderator, have an x-ray attenuation rate of over 90% for x-rays under 300 keV, have a thermal neutron attenuation of over 16,000, and have an embedded LED for operational checks. The current draw from the high voltage should be less than 200 mA. The Q&A file addresses questions about these technical requirements and confirms that the detector does not currently meet all of them, but modifications can be made to comply.

Text version
3_4 The detector shall be able to measure a neutron energy spectrum with an average of between 1 and 5 MeV before the moderator.
We have not tested the n-probe detector in neutron spectroscopy mode between 1 and 5 MeV.
This is NOT a requirement to measure the spectrum.
It is intended to specify the range of energies that the detector will be sensitive to. So the detector should not be sensitive to thermal neutrons which is what drives requirement 3_8 to block thermal neutrons before the moderator.
3_7 The detector shall have an x-ray attenuation rate (via Pb shield or similar) of >90% for x-rays < 300 keV.
The scintillator structure used in the n-probe makes it very insensitive to gamma rays. Additional shielding can be added if really needed.
The requirement for X-ray attenuation is because the detectors will be placed near superconducting rf accelerating cavities which produce x-rays, hence the desire for extra shielding.
3_8 The detector shall have a thermal neutron attenuation (via Cd layer or similar) of >1.6x104.
The n-probe does not include a Cd shield, but one can be added if needed.
As mentioned above, this requirement is to block the thermal neutrons before moderation of the 1-5 MeV neutrons.
3_11 The detector shall have an embedded LED for operational checks.
An on-board LED is not currently in our n-probe, but it can be included.
Yes we want an LED.
3_13 Current draw from high voltage shall be less than 200 μA.
The current draw with our present resistor string is 250 μA. The resistor string ca be adjusted to reduce this current draw if necessary.
This is a limit from our HV supplies.
