About this file

This document is a technical specification from the Illinois Division of Forest Resources regarding the proper care and handling of live-cold dormant tree seedlings during transport, temporary storage, and planting. The specification outlines the procedures to be followed when picking up seedlings from the Mason Nursery, including gently handling the bundles, avoiding tears and crushing, and covering the load with a tarp to minimize heat stress. The specification also provides guidance on storing the seedlings, depending on whether daytime temperatures are above or below 85°F, including the use of a refrigerated cold storage unit if temperatures exceed 85°F or if the seedlings must be held for longer than 48 hours before planting. The key requirements are to keep the seedlings at a temperature between 33°F and 38°F, avoid exposing them to direct sunlight and air, and plant them before leaf flush occurs.

The document does not provide any information about pricing, set asides, incumbents, funding requirements, or other contractual details. It is solely focused on the technical specifications for the proper care and handling of the tree seedlings to ensure their survival and successful planting.

ILLINOIS DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES

LIVE-COLD DORMANT TREE SEEDLING CARE; SPECIFICATION #002

Improper care of seedling stock is often the major cause in high initial mortality. Proper treatment of these new seedlings during the times of shipping, temporary storage, and planting is necessary to insure initial survival rates.

TREATMENT DURING TRANSPORT – SHIPPING

When certain situations arise and seedlings need to be picked up from a nursery, the following conditions should be taken into consideration:

• Handle bundles gently, avoid seedling bag tears, and avoid crushing. If possible, try not to stack the bundles greater than 2 high without support (like 2 x 4's etc.). When seedling bag tears occur, they should immediately be repaired. Do not leave seedlings unwrapped and exposed to sunlight and or air.

• In order to try to minimize heat stress, the load should be covered with a tarp and moved during the cool portion of the day (early AM or late PM). The tarp should be situated so that there is an air space between the top bundle and the tarp. Do not expose to significant heat or allow seedlings to dry.

* Proper planning of seedling planting operations requires the seedlings to be planted within 48 hours of leaving Mason Nursery unless a mobile Refrigerator unit is used for transport and storage during planting operation from the day seedlings are picked up from Mason Nursery until all seedings are planted. If a mobile refrigerator unit is used seedlings shall be planted within 2 weeks of pickup from Mason Nursery. If daytime temperatures exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit the day of pickup or any day during planting a mobile refrigerator unit is required for seedling storage from day of pickup through planting completion.

TREATMENT DURING OPERATION

A. Under 85oF and seedlings planted within 48 hours after pick from Nursery.

• Leave seedlings in their original, unopened shipping container, until they can be planted

• Store packages in a cool, well drained, shaded area. Such areas include the north side of an unheated building (like a barn or woodshed), a root cellar, or an improvised lean-to.

• Handle bags gently, avoid tears, and avoid crushing. If possible, try not to stack the bundles greater than 2 bundles high without some form of support. When tears occur, they should immediately be repaired. Do not leave seedlings exposed to sun and or air.

B. Over 85oF or if trees must be held longer than 48 hours before planted:

• Place unopened seedling packages in refrigerated cold storage unit.

• Refrigerator unit should keep seedlings at a temperature of 33o to 38o Fahrenheit. This temperature should never be allowed to get above 40o Fahrenheit.

• Walk-in coolers make good holding areas for seedlings.

• If possible, try not to stack the bundles greater than 2 high without some form of support.

• Remove trees only as needed.

• Do not store longer than necessary. Seedlings should be planted before leaf flush occurs.
