About this file
This document is a memorandum outlining the radiation shielding requirements for vacuum chambers to be designed and fabricated under a forthcoming Request for Information (RFI) for the ALS-U NEW AND UPGRADED BEAMLINES federal contract opportunity.
The memo specifies the minimum stainless steel equivalent thickness required for direct and indirect radiation shielding in white-beam and pink-beam configurations. It also provides guidance on shielding requirements for components such as slit blades and welds. The subcontractor may opt for internal port covers to create a 'labyrinth' structure to shield against scattered synchrotron radiation. A budgetary quote is requested for the final design iteration, which includes providing CAD models, welding drawings, dimensional results, material certifications, and design revisions based on the Radiation Physicist's review.
The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation for the ALS-U NEW AND UPGRADED BEAMLINES, with an RFI response due date of 05/17/2024. The University of California, on behalf of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), is the contracting agency.

MEMO – Radiation Shielding Requirements – 05/07/2024
The scope of work for this RFI encompasses the design and fabrication of vacuum chambers that meet LBNL’s shielding requirements to ensure the protection of personnel from synchrotron radiation. The minimum stainless steel equivalent thickness is:
● For direct radiation in white-beam: >19 mm, or >2 mm of tungsten
● For indirect radiation in white-beam: >6 mm
● For direct radiation in pink-beam: >5 mm
● For indirect radiation in pink-beam: >1 mm
The slit’s blades must meet the requirements for direct radiation, in the direction of beam propagation. All components of the vacuum chambers must meet the requirements for indirect radiation. Commercial components and bellows must be enclosed to ensure proper shielding.
Alternatively, the subcontractor may opt for internal port covers, as shown in the figure below.
These covers create a 'labyrinth' structure that can shield against scattered synchrotron radiation. It's important to note that welds are not credited for radiation shielding; therefore, require special considerations. Direct lines of sight through the weld from the optic to the outside should be avoided, for example, as illustrated in the figure, using 'labyrinth' welds rather than corner or butt welds.
A budgetary quote is requested for the final design iteration which includes providing CAD models, welding drawings and procedure documentation, dimensional results report for all shielding parts, material certifications, and design revisions based on the Lab’s Radiation Physicist’s review.
