About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document from a government procurement (DQ1 2019-0658) addressing specifications for gravel material to be used in trail construction. The procurement specifies a 5/8" gravel product, which differs from typical road construction specifications that commonly utilize larger 3/4" crusher fines material. The agency clarified that the 5/8" gravel specification was intentionally selected based on evaluation of project requirements, as this size is more suitable for trail applications than the larger 3/4" alternative.
A bidder questioned the gravel specification, noting that their available material (C-33 concrete sand) was 100% passing the 3/8" sieve with 68% passing the No. 4 sieve, and suggested substituting 3/4" crusher fines instead. The agency's response confirmed that while 3/4" gravel may be desirable for road construction projects, the 5/8" specification better meets the functional and performance requirements for this trail material application and would not be substituted with the alternative material proposed by the bidder.

Q and A – DQ1 2019-0658
Q: This is a strange spec. the percent passing is usually a range (i.e. #4 50-87 percent passing) our c-33 conc.sand is 100% passing the 3/8" sieve with only 68% passing the No.4 sieve. I would recommend a 3/4" crusher fines material for the project.
A: Concerning this comment, we are bidding on a 5/8” gravel as this is the gravel that fits our need. The 5/8” specification is needed because the gravel will be used for trail material. We have evaluated that while the 3/4” gravel is desirable for roads, it is not desirable for trail material.
