6 Site Planning Layouts
1 Introduction
This document gives specific information regarding site requirements for the MR Solutions Benchtop series of Cryogen-free superconducting MR Product.
For installation, the individual pieces will fit through a normal width doorway although double doorways make moving the equipment easier. Elevators should be checked to ensure that they are capable of handling the weight of the magnet assembly (up to 500kg including packing).
When deciding the final positions of the equipment in the scanner room, the following should be given consideration:
• access to the Scanner (magnet) for both the operator and maintenance in the future;
• access to the Electronics Rack, UPS, Cryo–compressor and Chiller for future maintenance;
• connectivity of the equipment. Pipes and cables can present trip hazards.
Considerate placement of the equipment can reduce these to a minimum;
• comfort of the operator. If the Cryo-compressor and chiller can be housed in a space adjacent to the scanner room or can be screened or housed in a cupboard within the scanner room it will improve the operator’s comfort.
Alternatively, the operator’s workstation could be located in an adjacent room.
Provision of furniture is the responsibility of the site.

2 Layout For the comfort of the operator, the Cryo-compressor and the Gradient chiller should ideally be installed in a different room from the operator, or in an enclosed cupboard.
It is recommended that the room be fitted with cupboards for storing RF coils and test objects, and have appropriate sample preparation benches built in.

Figure 2: Possible layout for the system and operator
2.2 Sample Handling
Front access: it is necessary for the animal handling base bed to be completely removed from the magnet.
There must be clear space at the front of the magnet to enable the loading and unloading of subjects for scanning into the magnet. This free space should be at least 90cm measured from the front of the magnet (ie, the same length (depth) as the magnet.
2.3 Maintenance
Rear access: it is necessary for the gradient coil to be installed (and removed) from the magnet. Hence, it will be necessary to have sufficient space at the rear of the magnet. Ideally there needs to be 90cm minimum of free space at the rear of the magnet to facilitate maintenance of the magnet in the future.

4 Room Requirements
The operator room will require tables and other appropriate furniture.
4.1 Equipment Housing
Should the ancillary equipment have to be in the same room as the operator (not recommended) then it is recommended that the equipment be housed in a closet with adequate ventilation within the room.
4.2 Internet
An internet connection to the MRI system is required for on-line real time support and temperature monitoring. (critical on first day of installation)
4.3 Air Conditioning Requirements
Control of heating and cooling is required to achieve room environments with relative humidity 30% to 60% non-condensing, at a room temperature of 20C or similar.
4.4 Mains Power Specifications
The requirements of the equipment and rack are set out below.
The Operator workstation is powered independently and requires a standard single phase mains supply of 120V – 240V, 13 Amp, 50Hz or 60Hz.
The mains for the Electronics rack and compressor should comply with the following specifications:
• Line to line unbalanced - maximum 2%
• Frequency: 50 or 60 Hertz, tolerance ±1%
In addition, a line survey is recommended to assess transients:
• Transients of >0.5m s to twice line peak voltage should not be present
• transients of 0.5-400m s to line peak voltage should occur less than 6 times per hour
At sites that suffer from regular power outages a UPS is recommended for the 3 Phase compressor supply, and may be provided by MR Solutions or the client. The supply to the Electronics rack and workstation is not seen to be as critical and UPS is not normally provided for this.
NOTE
Should the power fail, the magnet will retain its field for approximately 2 minutes, after which the current in the magnet will be automatically transferred back to magnet power supply for safety reasons. The magnet will then have to be cooled back down to its operating temperature and re-energized. How long this process takes depends on how long the power is off but could be more than 1 day.
All other equipment may be run from a non-maintained (regular) electricity supply.

| Page | 10 | of | 15 |
Appropriate power sockets should be supplied with plugs to match to allow the power cables to be connected on site. MR Solutions can provide examples of suitable plugs and sockets. The customer’s electrical contractor should be on site during the first day of installation.
4.5 Earthing
Critical points are:
• a clean, low impedance earth point must be provided independent of the main electrical safety earth;
• earth wiring should be to a single reference point, with no loops.
No other equipment should be connected to this earth scheme.
4.6 Cabling
The equipment rack is connected to the magnet assembly via a set of cables contained in a flexible conduit. In planning the equipment layout, this should be positioned so that it does not present a trip hazard and the length does not exceed 5 metres where possible.
4.7 Water Supply
The Cryo-cooler compressor requires:
Chilled water for cooling purposes
6-9 liters per minute minimum;
maximum pressure of 8 Bar.
Supply water temperature 5 to 25 degrees Celsius
Return water temperature from the Cryo-compressor
46 degrees Celsius max
The Cryo-cooler compressor has a cooling load of 26,700 BTU's.
4.8 Gradient Cooling
The gradient coil assembly requires cooling either by the client’s chilled water supply or by a separate “closed loop” chiller. If the laboratory does not have a suitable chilled water supply or separate chiller, then a closed loop water chiller for the Gradient coil can be specified and/or purchased from MR Solutions or the client can supply this item.
The supply to the compressor should be capable of being isolated from the compressor and a means of measuring or setting the flow rate should be provided.
The diagram in Figure 3 below shows an example of an appropriate water setup.

Figure 4: Compressor Figure 5: Magnet rear
The GREY lines in the compressor picture and the BLUE lines in the magnet picture (Figures 4 and 5 above) are the water pipes.
The user must provide a chilled water supply that is 24/7-365 days per year. The supply must be:
Fittings for water pipes:
1. Cooling water for cryo-compressor should be supplied from an 1/2” (13mm) brass hose barbed fitting for a 1/2” (13mm) id (interior diameter) hose.
2. Cooling water for the gradient coil set is via a closed loop system provided by the gradient chiller and does not require connection to the main water supply unless the client chooses to do so. No gradient chiller would then be required.
4.9 Visibly
• Temperature controlled
• Pressure regulated
• Flow controlled
• Filtered
• It is advisable to include a bypass for maintenance purposes.

5 Safety Notes
The mains power inlets should incorporate a manual “ON – OFF” switch, which is clearly labelled by the customer or customers contractor
An emergency STOP button will be installed by MR Solutions close to the operator’s console. If operated, this will remove the single phase supply to equipment within the electronics rack.
MR Solutions recommends all rooms should be fitted with heat detectors and smoke detectors.
5.1 Vibration
It is essential that the site is designed to avoid significant vibration of the magnet. If there is any doubt, a site vibration analysis should be undertaken.
5.2 RF Shielding
The Benchtop MRI system has a local RF shield that is attached to the ends of the magnet bore. The system is also provided with RF filtering for all MR system cables entering and leaving magnet assembly.
N.B. No RF room is required!
5.3 Static Magnet Field
The magnet must be positioned such that the 5 Gauss fringe field does not extend into areas with uncontrolled access.
Loose metallic objects can become a flying hazard in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Also, heart pacemakers are adversely affected by magnetic fields.
Customers are strongly advised to consult the safety regulations for clinical MRI equipment as a guide. MR Solutions can supply a copy of these upon request and can provide specific site planning appropriate to each site if required.
Below, Table 1 lists the typical maximum magnetic field strength exposures for other equipment.
However, the exact maximum exposures must be checked with the relevant equipment suppliers.

Table 1: Typical maximum magnetic field strength exposures for other equipment.
Note: We strongly recommend that the 1 Gauss line be kept within the room in which the scanner is installed as walls do not, in general, stop magnetic fields. This will also ensure that there is sufficient room around the magnet for, for example, installing the gradient set from the rear.
