A. Objective

The Research Center (Building 21) plans to purchase preclinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system for rodent imaging. The construction work includes renovation of room A302a in Building 21 to install a new MRI unit with equipment that also meets MRI safety zone requirements. The renovation will include but not limited to the following:

1. Demolition of an existing wall, metal window frame and glass

2. Partial removal of acoustic ceiling tiles and lighting fixtures

3. Relocation of ductwork, VAV box, hydronic piping, and electrical wiring

4. Construction of a new wall with paint and cove base

5. Install a new hollow metal frame for door and window

6. Install a new wood door and window glass

7. Install new electrical wiring and receptacles for the new equipment

8. Install new chilled water supply piping for the new equipment

9. Relocate fire sprinkler heads and add new ones if necessary

10. Add structural mounts, pads, and frames in order to minimize vibrations and support the weight of the MRI magnet and all equipment.

11. Match the new wall and finishes with the existing wall and floor finishes

B. Performance Period

The construction work should complete within 60 days from Notice to Proceed (NTP).

C. Place of Performance

All work will be performed at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Medical Center, Department of Veteran

Affairs, Research Center (Building 21), Room A302.

D. Equipment

MR SOLUTIONS GROUP (MRS) will provide MRS*DRYMAG technology that does not require liquid helium or liquid nitrogen for the cooling. It does not need any specific room requirements such as quench pipes, quench valve or a liquid helium reservoir. There are no requirements for ceiling height beyond standard room construction.

In addition to the magnet assembly and workstation, up to 4 other pieces of equipment may be provided by MRS:

• the Electronics system rack;

• the Cryo-compressor;

• an Un-Interruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the Cryo-compressor;

• Gradient chiller;

E. Room Requirements

1. Equipment Housing For the comfort of the operator, the cryo-compressor and the gradient chiller should ideally be installed in a different room from the operator, or in an enclosed cupboard. It is recommended that the equipment be housed in a closet with adequate ventilation within the room. MRS will provide the layout for this space. The space is divided with a simple wall with door access, window, and workstation.

2. Internet A wired internet connection (not Wi-Fi) to the MRI system is required for on-line real time support and temperature monitoring. It is critical on first day of installation.

3. Mains Power The requirements of the equipment and rack are set out below.

The Operator workstation is powered independently and requires a standard single-phase mains supply of 120V – 240V, 13 Amp, 50Hz or 60Hz.

The mains for the Electronics rack and compressor should comply with the following specifications:

• Line to line unbalanced - maximum 2%

• Frequency: 50 or 60 Hertz, tolerance ±1%

In addition, a line survey is recommended to assess transients:

• Transients of >0.5m s to twice line peak voltage should not be present

• Transients of 0.5-400m s to line peak voltage should occur less than 6 times per hour

Appropriate power sockets should be supplied with plugs to match to allow the power cables to be connected on site. MRS can provide examples of suitable plugs and sockets. The customer’s electrical contractor should be on site during the first day of installation.

4. Earthing Critical points are:

• A clean, low impedance earth point must be provided independent of the main electrical safety earth;

• Earth wiring should be to a single reference point, with no loops.

• No other equipment should be connected to this earth scheme.

5. Cabling The equipment rack is connected to the magnet assembly via a set of cables contained in a flexible conduit. In planning the equipment layout, this should be positioned so that it does not present a trip hazard and the length does not exceed 5 meters where possible.

Safety Notes

• The mains power inlets should incorporate a manual “ON – OFF” switch, which is clearly labelled by the customer or customers contractor.

• An emergency STOP button will be installed by MRS close to the operator’s console. If operated, this will remove the single-phase supply to equipment within the electronics rack.

• It is recommended all rooms should be fitted with heat detectors and smoke detectors.

6. Air Conditioning Room temperature controls are required to achieve environments with a non-condensing humidity of

30% to 70%, at a room temperature of 20°C ± 10%.

7. Water Supply The Cryo-cooler compressor requires:

Chilled water for cooling purposes: 6-9 liters per minute minimum; maximum pressure of 8 Bar.

Supply water temperature: 5 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Return water temperature from the Cryo-compressor: 46 degrees Celsius max The Cryo-cooler compressor has a cooling load of 26,700 BTU's.

8. Gradient Cooling The gradient coil assembly requires cooling either by the VAMC chilled water supply or by a separate “closed loop” chiller. If the laboratory does not have a suitable chilled water supply or separate chiller, then a closed loop water chiller for the Gradient coil can be specified and/or purchased from MRS or the VAMC can supply this item.

The supply to the compressor should be capable of being isolated from the compressor and a means of measuring or setting the flow rate should be provided.

Flexible hoses are required from the water distribution panel to the site of the compressor and the back of the magnet to fit the site layout. These will be provided by MRS and will be insulated to avoid water condensation.

The user must provide a chilled water supply that is 24/7-365 days per year. Fittings for water pipes must be:

• Cooling water for cryo-compressor should be supplied from an 1/2” (13mm) brass hose barbed fitting for a 1/2” (13mm) id (interior diameter) hose.

• Cooling water for the gradient coil set is via a closed loop system provided by the gradient chiller and does not require connection to the main water supply unless the client chooses to do so. No gradient chiller would then be required.
