About this file

This is a Performance Work Statement (PWS) for Energy Finite Element Analysis (EFEA) Technical Support to be provided to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock (NSWCCD) Code 7240.

The contractor shall develop a MATLAB-executable mesh generator code to streamline the conversion of Naval design data into finite element models, specifically creating a fluid mesh for the area between non-pressure and pressure hulls in 2D submarine models. This effort aims to reduce labor hours and human errors in model creation for rapid concept design assessments. The three primary deliverables are: (A001) a MATLAB code for creating second-order elements in Abaqus format; (B001) a conceptual finite element model incorporating second-order elements; and (C001) a PowerPoint technical report documenting code execution procedures and providing usage examples. The period of performance is six months from the date of award. No special qualifications, applicable documents, government-furnished equipment, or security requirements are specified. The statement indicates that detailed format and delivery schedules for deliverables will be outlined in the Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRLs).

PERFORMANCE WORK STATEMENT (PWS)

Energy Finite Element Analysis (EFEA) Technical Support

1.0 DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES/INTRODUCTION:

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock (NSWCCD) Code 7240 requires technical support from Michigan Engineering Services, Inc.’s Dr. Nickolas Vlahopoulos to help develop a mesh generator code. Dr. Vlahopoulos, Chief Technology Officer, Michigan Engineering Services, Inc., is the lead architect and developer of the advanced FEA software, Energy Finite Element Analysis Software, which is under assessment for its applicability to support future submarine design.

2.0 BACKGROUND:

Creating Finite Elements (FE) models from a given Naval design information, especially 2D, can be tedious and labor-intensive. To support rapid assessments of future concept design, a streamline of converting the design data to numerical models could greatly reduce labor hours and human-errors.

This task aims to develop a mesh generator code that can be executed by MATLAB for creating a fluid mesh for the area enclosed between the non-pressure hull and the pressure hull of a 2D model (Generator Code). The structural model of the non-pressure hull and of the pressure hull will comprise the input to the Generator Code. The fluid mesh will be combined with the structural model for performing Energy Finite Element Analysis (EFEA) simulations.

3.0 OBJECTIVE:

3.1 The contractor shall:

3.1.1 Provide a MATLAB code in creating second order elements in Abaqus format

3.1.2 Provide an example of FE model using the MATLAB code

3.1.3 Provide a PowerPoint document on how to execute the code and the example

4.0 SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: N/A

5.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS: N/A

6.0 GOVERNMENT FURNISHED EQUIPMENT/PROPERTY/INFORMATION: N/A
