About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers file for the XM157 Fire Control Additional Capabilities pre-solicitation (Solicitation Number PANNWJ-25-P0000-002711). The document provides technical clarifications about potential advanced capabilities for a military fire control system, with key areas of interest including range finding, live atmospherics, aim augmentation, passive targeting, aided target detection, and spectral imaging technologies. The US Army is seeking innovative technologies and software modules that can enhance the XM157 sight system, with a focus on improving target detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities across various environmental conditions.
The Q&A document reveals the Army's openness to vendor expertise in optimizing Size, Weight, and Power (SWAP-C) while enhancing soldier performance. Specific technical areas of interest include meteorological data collection, electromagnetic spectrum analysis, target discrimination techniques, and software/hardware solutions that can aid in detecting, recognizing, and tracking targets. The solicitation is conducted by the US Army Contracting Command - New Jersey on behalf of Project Manager Soldier Lethality, seeking novel technologies that can be integrated as modules into the XM157 magnified direct view optic to increase target engagement speed and probability of hit.

PANNWJ-25-P0000-002711 – Additional Capabilities for the XM157 Fire Control Questions and Answers
Q1. Range finding: What is the range and accuracy required in the day and night? Different technologies can offer different accuracies impacting the cost and size, so we want to be sure what is needed.
A1: We are looking for your expertise to learn what that space trade is. You have the freedom to provide current capabilities or current R&D efforts that’s being worked on that optimizes SWAP-C while providing the best performance possible to the soldier.
Q2. Live Atmospherics: What does it mean? Do you need Pressure, Temperature, Humidity and Crosswinds?
A2: All meteorological data is important for ballistic calculations. The ability to measure crosswind direction and magnitude downrange would be beneficial
Q3. Aim augmentation: Is this to provide crosswind or range compensated offset aimpoint (OAP) to the XM157 electronic reticle?
A3: Aim Augmentation is not the offset aimpoint, it is something that enhances a shooter's ability to aim and hit their target accurately and efficiently.
Q4. Passive Targeting: Does this mean to not illuminate the target for detecting, recognizing and identifying during day and night?
A4: Passive implies no emitters of any kind used to detect or engage targets
Q5. Aided target detection, aided target tracking, and threat recognition: Aided by who? Will a laser be used to aid? For example in Army's STORM, location of a target was determined by the LRF and direction from a known GPS position that was radioed to a Helo or others.
A5: Software and Hardware solution to help detect, recognize, and track targets
Q6. Spectral Converging and hyperspectral imaging: Does this mean to be able to see a target in dust, smoke, fog, snow, rain etc? An overmatch need??
A6: Spectral converging combines and leverages data from multiple electromagnetic spectrum bands (e.g., visible, infrared, ultraviolet) to enhance target detection, identification, and engagement. Hyperspectral imaging captures and analyzes a continuous and very wide range of light wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum. Both of these can provide improved Target Discrimination and Situational Awareness.
