About this file

This file is a PowerPoint presentation describing the NRL 66.5 robotic material testing system that the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is modifying for upright operation. The presentation outlines the transition from the current NRL 66.3 horizontal configuration system to a new upright NRL 66.5 system being developed by NRL's Computational Multiphysics Systems Lab (Code 6394). The new system will feature six actuators positioned in a specific location within the structure, utilize two Hardinge collet grips that NRL will acquire and install, and incorporate a static superstructure without top actuation. The extension structure will be designed to be replaceable to accommodate different specimen sizes, with only one extension structure required at the current time. The presentation notes that no components from the old NRL 66.3 system will be reused in the new system.

This file supports the related NRL Robotics Industry Day pre-solicitation (N0017326RFIGF12), where the Department of the Navy Office of Naval Research is seeking contractors for commissioning and upgrading of the robotic system to achieve the desired future state outlined in these specifications. The presentation serves as technical reference material for potential contractors interested in participating in the site visit and demonstration of capabilities, providing detailed information about the system architecture and key design parameters that contractors should understand when considering their involvement in this upgrade project.

NRL 66.5: The system to be modified for upright operation.

U.S. NRL - Computational Multiphysics Systems Lab. - Code 6394 Current Horizontal Configuration

U.S. NRL - Computational Multiphysics Systems Lab. - Code 6394 NRL 66.3: Our old upright system. Pointed notes below indicate some properties of the new system. No part of the old system will be used for the new system.

6-Axes Robotic Material Testing via NRL66.3 system - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px5FvX-saVs

The 6 actuators of the new system (66.5) will be located here.

Grips will likely be two Hardinge collet systems:

FlexC – Link. NRL will acquire/install those.

The new system will have a static superstructure and no actuation at the top.

Extension structure should be replaceable to accommodate different size specimens. Only one is required at this time.
