NNC16ZLT005R Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) Blanket Questions and Answers #1

1. Could you please provide a clarification between the following two statements in the RFP as to which one takes precedent?

· Section 1: “The MLI insulation system design will include development of an attachment scheme for the MLI such that: MLI is not in physical contact with the SOFI”

· Section 3.2.3.2 “The MLI system shall not be attached to the spray on foam insulation (SOFI).”

One could conceive of a concept that allows the MLI to lay on the SOFI yet not be attached to the SOFI. Would this be allowed?

Section 3.2.3.2 takes precedent. A more clear expression of our intent in saying that the MLI should not be in physical contact with the SOFI is: the MLI must remain in its intended configuration under static or dynamic (launch environment) conditions, while not exerting tensile or shear forces on the SOFI.

2. What are represented by the dots on the tank drawing (eCryo-SCM-0086)? Assuming these are some sort of structural mounts that protrude through the MLI, are they available for attaching the MLI?

These are structural mounts for potentially attaching active thermal control piping at a future date. These will be buried beneath the SOFI, and will not be available for attaching MLI.

3. Is there a targeted mass for the “MLI System”?

There is no targeted mass. Lower mass at a given performance level is always preferable.
