Exhibition Program
Lesson Plan Template Overview
Appendix #TBD
Lesson plan is an instructional resource related to an online exhibition that presents themes and perspectives, using text and visual/multimedia primary and secondary sources.
Lesson plan is a part of an exhibition website’s Education Resources section, and promotes use of exhibition and the National Library of Medicine’s resources in K-12 classroom instructions. To this end, lesson plan offers a template for educators to incorporate into existing curricula for the targeted grade levels.
Each lesson outlines instructional materials and steps for up to three 45-minute class periods, using a template with the elements outlined below:
• Title of the lesson plan: no more than 47 characters including spaces
• Subjects: Currently there are 4 subject categories in use: literature, history & social studies, health education, or science & technology.
• Grade Level: targeted grade levels
• Time Needed: # of 45-minute class periods
• Description: A summary that provides a quick overview of what the lesson plan is about for educators to consider. The first paragraph is 1-2 sentences, which will be used as the lesson plan description on the Education Resources landing page. See an example Education Resources landing page at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/graphicmedicine/resources.html.
• Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to: This elements lists measurable and targeted knowledge and/or process skills that students gain through the activities in the lesson plan. Outcomes are bullet listed and do not exceed 5.
• Background Information: The information about the exhibition and any other resources prepare teachers ‘fully’ to implement the lesson plan as delivered. The background eliminates any additional research that an educator need to learn about the topics or instructional strategies.
• Vocabulary: The following words may be introduced/incorporated into the lessons. The list provides educators a way to identify vocabulary that may require direct instructions based on their students as needed.
• Materials: All instructional materials for conducting the lesson activities are delivered in the lesson plan--e.g., student handouts/worksheets and companion teacher’s key to any worksheets with answers or suggested discussion guides. These materials are delivered as MSWord and PDF files so that teachers can print or download them for class https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/graphicmedicine/resources.html
Exhibition Program distribution or projection via an overhead projector/smart board. The content developer delivers all materials only as MSWord documents.
For Class Procedures below, each lesson plan consists of 1-3 classes. Each class procedure covers 40-45 minutes of class time. Total number of classes, specific procedures, and class activities support students’ achieving the learning outcomes addressed in the lesson plan.
• Class # Procedures: Procedures for each lesson period is described and mentions the instructional materials in use during the class period. The on-going evaluation(s) are called out as such.
The step-by-step procedures integrate diverse instructional strategies, such as scaffolding, integrated-evaluation, 5E, multidisciplinary, need-to-know, etc. The procedures provide a template that structure student learning in teacher-assisted and learner-centered/directed manners.
1. Step by step procedures
2…… X. Class # Evaluation
• Evaluations: summarizes evaluation steps in all lesson procedures
• Extension: if appropriate provide a brief extension activity that students may do individually or as a group
• Content Area Standards and/or Common Core State Standards
