Installation of Aquaria Cold Room

NF-FN7110-22-01330 / 2022-172 Cold Room Install

1.0 BACKGROUND/OVERVIEW

As part of the National Resource Damage Assessment [NRDA] Open Ocean Restoration Plan 2 in response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, a Coral Propagation and Technique Development (CPT) project has been created as part of the Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Community restoration portfolio.

The NOAA Fisheries laboratory in Galveston, TX has been identified as one of three federal labs that will develop cold water aquaria to accommodate target coral species from mesophotic [12-22℃] and deep depths [3-4℃] for rearing and experimental trials.

2.0 REQUIREMENT

The Galveston Laboratory has historically conducted research on primarily warm water animals.

There is available space in large warehouse style buildings that either have no HVAC control, or have heat only. In order to rear mesophotic and deep benthic corals, an insulated modular climate-controlled Cold Room needs to be installed within a larger building on the laboratory property.

3.0 TASKS & SPECIFICATIONS

3.1 TASK 1: Upgrade the Turtle Barn electrical panel from 100A to 200A.

The current electrical service supplying the Turtle Barn is of insufficient capacity to support both the activities and electrical demands of the existing activities and those proposed for the new Cold Room. The existing panel is a 200A panel, but it is currently serviced with 100A.

The existing power panel is serviced with a buried 1-1/2” PVC conduit which is insufficient to carry 200A. The main power service is rated at 600A, and is capable of supporting the upgrade from 100A to 200A service. The main service is 3 phase, with a high leg [Delta ‘B’ phase], but only single phase is used to service the turtle barn. The 100A service is currently in use and continuity of service is necessary. Power outage in the Turtle Barn should not exceed 12 hours during the upgrade from 100A to 200A. The main power service is approximately 21 linear feet away [northeast] from the existing entrance point of the Turtle Barn power panel.

The contractor will need to verify the actual distance and budget accordingly.

3.1.1 Excavate the existing 1-1/2” PVC conduit from the existing power panel back to the main service gutter.

3.1.2 Add new 2” PVC conduit from the existing service gutter to the entrance point of the Turtle Barn. Contractor shall install conduit sized appropriately for 200 amp service from the existing service gutter to the entrance point of the Turtle Barn.

Conduit shall be properly rated for underground conditions. Direct burying power is not acceptable.

3.1.3 Underground Conduits

3.1.3.1 Conduits shall be buried to a minimum of 24 inches.
