7.4 Conduct an annual inspection of the fire hoses and

stations using Reference 2.2 as guidance. The inspection is to verify:

7.4.1 Each fire hydrant has at least one length of

fire hose, a spanner wrench, and a hose rack or other device for stowing the hose. Spanners are suitable for use on the hose at that station.

7.4.2 Each fire station hydrant or “y” branch is

equipped with a valve so that the hose may be removed while there is pressure on the fire main.

a. Inspect all flanged connections to fire main piping and hydrants for gasket material that has been identified by APB to be "readily rendered ineffective by heat". An example of gasket material that has been accepted by ABS for us in fire main and hydrant flanged connections is reddish brown Garlock

Series 9900 or equal ABS Type Approved material per ABS Rules 4-

6-1/3.5, 4-6-2/9.5 vi), 4-7-3/1.11.1. Include a listing of connection that are unacceptable or questionable to the OMT REP.

7.4.3 Firehoses are connected to the outlets. On open

decks where no protection is afforded to the hose in heavy weather, or where the hose may be liable to damage from the handling of cargo, the hose may be temporarily removed from the hydrant and stowed in an accessible nearby location.

7.4.4 Each firehose on each hydrant has a combination

solid stream and water spray firehose nozzle approved under subpart 46 CFR §162.027.

7.4.5 Visually examine each hose for broken, damaged, or missing parts.

7.4.6 In each propulsion machinery space containing

an oil-fired boiler or internal combustion machinery, each fire hose having combination nozzle must have a low-velocity water

AUXILIARY MACHINERY CONTRACT NO. FY25 VR2 NXXXXXXXXXXX

For Tank Vessel requirements see 46 CFR Table 34.10-10(E).

7.4.7 Each low-velocity water spray applicator has

fixed brackets, hooks, or other means for stowing next to the hydrant.

7.4.8 Firehose is not being used for any other

purpose than fire extinguishing, drills, and testing.

7.4.9 Inspect the physical condition of all hoses

checking for damage, cuts, abrasions, and mildew.

7.4.10 Visually examine the hose lining at each end

for signs of delamination.

7.4.11 Fire station hydrant connections are brass, bronze, or other equivalent metal.

7.4.12 Fire hydrants, nozzles, and other fittings have

threads to accommodate the hose connections noted below.

Couplings are to:

a. Use National Standard firehose coupling threads for the 1-1⁄2 inch (38 millimeter) and 2-1⁄2 inch (64 millimeter) hose sizes (9 threads per inch for 1-1⁄2 inch hose, and 7-1⁄2 threads per inch for 2-1⁄2 inch hose); or

b. To be a uniform design, for each diameter hose, throughout the vessel to allow for interchangeability.

c. Each section of firehose is lined commercial firehose that conforms to Underwriter’s Laboratories, Inc.

Standard 19 or Federal Specification ZZ-H-451E.

d. Ensure there is a shore connection to the fire main on each side of the vessel in an accessible location.
