The elevator is equipped with a tower structure, which contains the system's guide rails and is secured to only one bulkhead --a feature that minimizes equipment binding due to bulkhead dis-tortions due to ship motion. The equipment is desisned to meet the applicable regulations of the American Standard- Safety Code for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators, and Moving Walks, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

The system is designed for use in a protected environment, and can be maintained through use of normal shipboard equipment. No special tools or test equipment are required. Principal system components are the tower assembly, car assembly, machinery pack-age, control system, and associated system components. These as-semblies are detailed by the drawings which appear at the rear of this manual and are described by the paragraphs that follow.

SECTION 3

'DESCRIPTION

3-1. GENERAL

The UniDynamics' marine elevator is passenger system, consist-ing of a tower assembly, elevator car assembly, machinery pack-age, control system, and associated items. Brief descriptions of these assemblies are as follows:

3-2. TOWER ASSEMBLY

The tower assembly consists of standard eight-pounds-per-foot el-evator car and counterweight rails with supporting members and extends the entire length .of elevator travel. The structure is secured to the bulkhead by means of angle clips which are bolted and welded to the tower structure and welded to the bulkhead.

Tower sections are jointed together with heavy duty splice plates. Rail ends are tongue and grooved to insure alignment.

3-3. ELEVATOR CAR ASSEMBLY

The elevator car assembly (See Figure 3-1 and Drawings 14341000) is a welded steel enclosure with inside dimensions of 51" x 52" x 84", and is equipped with power-operated doors which present a clear opening of 2 ' - 6" x 6' - 6". A drop ceiling is provided and rubber tile is used on the floor. Walls are paneled and wall pads are provided to protect the paneling when freight is being transported. Car equipment includes an escape hatch, con-trol panel, light assembly, emergency light assembly, fan, tele-phone, steps, and hand rail. Other car equipment includes guide rollers (41, static switch assembly, car top inspection station, and car safeties.

The car doors are electrically interlocked so that the car can-not be moved unless the doors are closed. In addition, the doors are equipped with sensitive edges which electrically re-verse door movement should an obstacle be encountered while closing.

The escape hatch is located in the ceiling of the car and is al-so interlocked and must be closed and the interlock set before the car can be moved in normal operation. The control panel pro-vides pushbuttons for each level served, and emergency (push-to-stop) switch, light switch, car door open switch, and an alarm pushbutton.

The light assembly operates from the ship's 120 volt supply and contains two 20 watt fluorescent bulbs. The emergency light as-sembly contains a nickle cadmium battery and is automatically

switched on when the ship's voltage is disrupted. When fully charged the battery is capable of providing eight hours of oper-ation. Three folding steps are secured to the wall of the car and are normally left in the "up" position. They are placed in the "down" position to gain access to the emergency escape hatch in the car ceiling.

The static switch assembly is located atop the car and contains five static (optical) switches which are used in conjunction with vane assemblies in the hoistway to produce signals which are fed to the logic assembly. The car top operating station is a small control box secured to the roof of the car and used on-ly during inspection procedures. Controls include an OPERATE/ INSPECT toggle switch, a SAFETY switch, and UP and DOWN pushbut-ton switches. When the OPERATE/INSPECT switch is placed in the Insp position, the normal elevator controls are overridden and system control is at the car top inspection station.

The elevator guide rollers (four) are located on two sides of the elevator car, and are spaced so they "ride" along the guide rails in the hoistway to maintain car alignment during travel.

The car safeties are Type "A" safeties and are located under-neath the car. The safeties are connected to an overspeed gover-nor and when actuated, wedge into the guide rails to stop and hold the car.

3-4. MACHINERY PACKAGE ASSEMBLY

The machinery package assembly (See Figure 3-2 and Drawing 14341200) provides the driving forces for the elevator and con-sists of an electric motor with integral brake, a gear reduction assembly, traction sheave, and associated items. All items are mounted on a single bedplate and located in the machinery room adjacent to the hoistway at the 06 Level.

The electric motor is a two-speed (1200/300 rpm), 7.5/1.9 horse-power device which operates from a 440 volt, three phase, 60 HZ pober source. Integral with the motor is a solenoid-operated, spring-set, brake. The motor is housed in a dripproof enclo-sure. The brake is equipped with a manual release. Both motor and brake are marine types and conform to applicable IEEE45 and U.S. Coast Guard'specifications.

The motor output is coupled to a splash-lubricated gear reducer assembly. The gear reducer output drives a grooved, 20-inch pitch diameter traction sheave which moves hoist ropes that raise and lower the car and counterweight.

3-5. CONTROL SYSTEM

I The control system is selective collective, that is, it accepts both up and down calls but will answer each up call or each down call first, depending on the initial direction of travel.

All deck pushbutton stations have pushbuttons that light when a call is registered. Intermediate Decks have up and down push-buttons. There are send pushbuttons on the car control panel. The system is fused and interlocked, and provides emergency STOP switches. During inspection mode, the car is operated from the car top inspection station on its roof.

The control system logic consists of static switches mounted on the car, vanes mounted in the hoistway, and logic circuitry on the electronic component panel located in the machinery room. The circuitry includes OR, AND, NOR, and NAND gates, inverters and other components used in combination to produce the selective collective operation. The system is interlocked such that the car can not move unless all doors are closed, the elevator is within its normal travel limits, power requirements are satisfied, elevator safeties have not been'set, and all other interlocks and switches are in their proper operating position.

The elevator control system is further described in the sections on ODeration and Troubleshootinq.

I

3-6 ASSOCIATED 8Y8TEM COMPONENTS

overspeed governor, overhead sheaves, motor controller, logic controller, buffer assemblies, guide rails, wire ropes, traveling

Associated system components include the counterweight, cable, and hoistway doors. the I The counterweight counterbalances the elevator car. It has four guide shoes to ride the counterweight rails. The counterweight is tied to suspension ropes which are reeved over the overhead sheaves, the deflection sheave and around the traction sheave and down to the elevator car top. The counterweight has safeties which are actuated by a broken rope device.

The overhead sheaves are located at the top of the hoistway and serve to direct the hoisting ropes from the machinery package to the elevator car and counterweight. The sheaves are grooved and are equipped with a mounting plate and attaching hardware.

The motor controller is an electrical device located in the mach-inery room which controls the speed and direction of the elevator drive motor through the use of motor contactors. The unit also houses system relays, fuses, terminal boards, etc.

The logic controller is an electrical device located in the machine room which contains the logic board, terminal boards and system relays. It receives signals from the push buttons and car switches and makes up, down, fast, slow, and door open decisions.

The overspeed governor (See Figure 3-3) is a centrifugally-activated device located in the overhead, and designed to monitor elevator car speed and to react to set the car safeties and open

3-3 Change B

Figure 3-3 OVERSPEED GOVERNOR -.

3-3A the electric control power if a predetermined speed is exceeded.

The unit operates in conjunction with an endless wire rope and a tension weight located in the hoistway.

During operation, the movement o€ the elevator car pulls one side of the looped wire rope, forcing the governor sheave to ro-tate at a speed proportional to the speed of the elevator car.

When an overspeed condition develops, the centrifugal weight com-presses its spring load and pivots in an outward direction until it comes into contact with a pawl secured to the actuating pivot arm. This forces the grooved, bronze, rope brake shoe on the arm to clamp the wire rope against the governor sheave. The re-sultant rope tension activates a lever arm on the elevator car, which through a rod arrangement, sets the elevator car safeties.

The linkage also actuates a switch which interrupts power to the electric motor and causes the motor brake to set.

Buffer assemblies are provided at the bottom of the hoistway.

The first assembly is mounted under the elevator car, and pro-vides two spring assemblies in the vertical position to serve as buffers. The second assembly consists of two springs, mounted vertically to serve as a buffer for the counterweight.

The guide rails are the standard 8 pounds-per-foot "T" rails made of high strength steel and approved for elevator use.

The wire ropes used as car suspension ropes are 1/2 inch in diam-eter traction steel ropes, with a minimum breaking strength of 14,500 pounds. Rope weight is . 4 pounds per foot. The governor rope is 3/8 inches in diameter, and has a minimum breaking rat-ing of 8,200 pounds. This rope weighs .2 pounds per foot.

A l l power and signals to and from the car are by means of a trav-eling cable which hangs in the hoistway and enters the elevator car through a connection at the car platform. A cable guard is provided in the hoistway to prevent the ship's motion from entan-gling the cable.

The hoistway doors, located at each level served, are electrical-ly interlocked so that the elevator cannot be put into motion unless the doors are closed. Each door is also mechanically interlocked so that the door cannot be opened unless the car is present at that level.

SECTION 5

THEORY OF OPERATION

5-1. GENERAL

The UniDynamics' elevator has been designed for continuous ser-vice, and once energized, may be left in this operation mode.

However, extraordinary circumstances, test, or maintenance proce-dures may require shutting the system down and then reenergizing

it. This section provides instructions for operating the system in each of its operating modes. In addition, a complete descrip-tion of each operating control and indicator is provided.

5-2. CONTROLS AND INDICATORS

Functional description and operation of all operator controls and indicators are provided in Table 2-1 at the end of this section.

5-3. OPERATING PROCEDURES

The elevator is controlled by means of various switches located on the car control panel, the level control stations, the car top inspection station, and in the machinery room. The car control panel (See Figure 5-1) is located in the car. It has system send buttons and car position indicator lights. Level control stations (See Figure 5-2) are located at each level served. These have pushbutton(s) that illuminate when a call is registered. The car top inspection station (See Figure 5-3) is located atop the elevator car and is equipped with UP, DOWN, and PUSH TO RUN pushbuttons. This station, however, is only used for inspection, and is not used in normal operation of the system. The line disconnect switch is located in the machinery room and applies 440 volt, 3 phase power to the system. The following procedures provide complete instructions for energizing the system, normal operation, attendant operation, emergency operation, and system shutdown .

I 5-4. Energizinq The System

Perform the following steps in the sequence given to energize the elevator system:

1. Perform an overall visual inspection of the elevator system to ensure that:

a. All tools, equipment, etc., have been removed from the elevator area.

b. No physical interference exists between the ele-vator and temporary obstructions used during re-pair, maintenance, etc.

c. All doors, lids, panels, etc., have been replaced.

2. In the machinery room, close the line disconnect switch on the motor controller. (This makes power available to the motor con- - - -tactors and to the step down transformer which provides control system voltage.) Also, in the machinery room, close the separate 120 VAC disconnect switch. (This makes power available to the lights, fan and receptacles on the car and heaters in the motor and motor controller.)

3 . At the elevator car, use the key-operated switch to turn ,on the car lights. Energize car fan, .if desired.

4 . At the car control panel, verify that the Attendant Control switch is in the NORMAL position.

Note: When the above control is in the ATTENDANT posi-tion, control is by means of the car control panel only.

Call signals are locked out, but are registered by illumination of the corresponding car position light.

5 - 5 . Normal Mode Of Operation.

Following is the normal mode of operation for the UniDynamics' elevator: (The elevator is assumed to be at another level.)

1. Depress a CALL pushbutton at one of the level control stations. (The car will automatically leave the other level, proceed to the commanded level, and stop. The doors will open.)

2 . Enter car. Hoistway and car doors will close automatically.

3 . Select and depress the SEND pushbutton and/or use the sound-powered telephone (opposite station is located in the wheelhouse) on the car control panel corresponding to the desired destination level.

travel to the commanded level, and stop.)

(The car will automatically start, 4 . After doors open automatically, leave elevator. Doors will close automatically.

Note: The control system logic is equipped with an ad-justable timer (usually set for 10 seconds) which injects a time delay from completion of one command to acceptance of another. This prevents the car from being called away be-fore'a passenger has time to leave the elevator upon ar-rival at his destination.

5-6. Emergency Operating Procedures

Should a malfunction occur during operation, the following proce-dures should be followed:

1. Summon aid by depressing the alarm (buzzer) pushbutton and/or use the sound powered telephone (opposite station is located in the wheelhouse) on the car control panel.
