1.0 BACKGROUND

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV) program is a composite of related technical developments, engineering studies and scientific research. The Autonomous and Defensive Systems Department (Code 82) and the Platform and Payload Integration Department (Code 40) are tasked with developing and demonstrating new UUV’s and their associated Advanced Ocean Technologies. The programs concentrate primarily on the development of the UUV and their associated Advanced Ocean Technologies, including shipboard integration and support systems. The UUV programs support the following collective activities: seafloor characterization, virtual modeling, real-time visualization, ocean sensing, oceanographic research, sensor development and autonomy.

Additionally, the UUV and the related development of Advanced Ocean Technologies also support the following Programs: Persistent Littoral Undersea Surveillance (PLUS), Digital Acoustic Communications (D-ACOMMS), Remote Environmental Measuring Units (REMUS) Autonomous Undersea Vehicle (AUV), Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) "Fast Track" UUV and the REMUS Auto Launch & Recovery (L&R) program.
