OPERATING THE EQUIPMENT, ALL NECESSARY STEPS MUST BE TAKEN BY THE
OWNER TO COMPLY WITH VARIOUS FEDERAL, NAVY, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS
REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO INSTALLATION AND SAFE OPERATION.
THIS PUMP IS NOT TO BE OPERATED AT SPEEDS, WORKING (DISCHARGE) PRESSURES
OR TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN, NOR USED WITH LIQUIDS OTHER THAN STATED
IN THE ORIGINAL ORDER ACKNOWLEDGMENT WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION OF
SIMS PUMP CO. SEE THE “SAFETY PRECAUTIONS” ON PAGE FOUR OF THIS
INSTRUCTION MANUAL.
REFER TO THE MANUALS PROVIDED BY MANUFACTURERS OF OTHER RELATED
EQUIPMENT FOR THEIR SEPARATE INSTRUCTIONS.
WARNING
ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND WIRING ARE TO BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH
NAVY SAFETY CODES.
DO NOT OPERATE EQUIPMENT WITH OPEN ELECTRICAL BOXES OR FITTINGS.
CONTACT WITH INCORRECTLY WIRED EQUIPMENT COULD RESULT IN INJURY.
DO NOT OPERATE PUMP WITH BOTH SUCTION AND DISCHARGE VALVES CLOSED OR
WITH SUCTION OR DISCHARGE CLOSED BY CLOGGING – THIS COULD CAUSE
DAMAGE AND IS DANGEROUS. PUMPS ARE TO BE USED FOR LIQUID SERVICE ONLY.
EXCESS PRESSURE CAN CAUSE MALFUNCTION LEADING TO INJURY.
WARNING
THIS PUMP IS EQUIPPED WITH A MECHANICAL SHAFT SEAL. TO ENSURE PROPER
PERFORMANCE OF THE SEAL THE PUMP MUST NEVER BE RUN DRY. ALWAYS CHECK
TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SUCTION SIDE OF THE PUMP IS IN AN OPEN POSITION AND
THAT THE PUMP CHAMBER IS FLOODED PRIOR TO PUMP START UP. EVEN A FEW
SECONDS OF DRY RUN CAN DAMAGE THE SEAL CONTACT SURFACES AND RESULT IN
LEAKAGE.
1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Recommended basic safety practices to help prevent serious personal injury or property damage:
1. Never work on a pump unless it has been locked out, both electrically and hydraulically, from the system. (This should be done with an appropriate tag-out system on electrical controllers and on any valves involved.)
2. Be sure all liquid fittings are properly tightened to prevent leak hazards to personnel and to avoid flooding of surrounding equipment.
3. Do not operate at higher speeds, temperatures or pressures than specified without first consulting Sims Pump Co. Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury or property damage.
4. Do not operate in liquid other than specified on original purchase order without first consulting Sims Pump Co. Many parts are available in several different materials for different chemical environments. Your pump’s materials were chosen for a specific application. Operating in different conditions may result in serious personal injury or property damage, and will void your warranty.
5. Replace any worn parts.
6. Follow the instructions in this manual.
2. INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: The following instructions are a guide to assist you in proper installation procedures.
Probably the most important thing you can do to enhance the life and smooth operation of this machine is to plan your installation by following these installation procedures and other good machinery practices. If questions should arise, contact the Sims Pump Co. for assistance.
2.1 LOCATION
In most cases the pump location will be determined by
PLANS AS PREPARED BY THE CUSTOMER.
However, in those cases where plans are not available, the following points are recommended for good engineering practice and reliable pump operations:
1. Locate pump as close as possible to the source of supply and avoid a long suction line to pump.
Provide sufficient net positive suction head to satisfy pump under the maximum anticipated system flow conditions.
2. Ensure that sufficient floor space and head room are available so that the unit can be dismantled at some later date for inspection and repair.
3. Install the pump in a well-ventilated, dry location where the seal chamber and/or pump case liquid
(when dismantling) can be piped to drain. (If required, provide flushing water for mechanical seal at pump location.)
2.2 FOUNDATION
The foundation should be a rigid installation of concrete and/or steel that will be of sufficient size to absorb all normal pump and motor vibrations. Pump baseplate foundation bolts should be located in concrete or welded to the floor or frame by use of a template frame and in accordance with pump outline drawing as furnished by the manufacturer. Providing concrete is used to prepare the pump foundation, foundation bolts may be enclosed in a pipe sleeve three diameters larger than the bolt size to provide flexibility in compensating for minor variations in template frame layout.
2.3 PIPING
Suction piping length should be as short as possible and free from all air leaks. The suction line should be no smaller in diameter than the opening in the pump suction flange and should have a continuous rise or fall from the source to eliminate high spots or air pockets. It is important that the suction pipe be independently supported in such a manner that no strains will be transmitted to the pump suction flange.
2.4 ROTATION
Check motor rotation prior to starting and placing pump on stream. Isolate pump and jog motor for a rotation check. The pump rotation is clockwise looking from the fan end of the motor.
2.5 FASTENERS-PUMP ASSEMBLY AND
MOUNTING
All torque values listed below are based on dry unlubricated threads. If threads are lubricated with antiseize, torque values should be 2/3 of the listed values.
1. The following listed torque values are the maximum limits that should be applied for tightening S/S 18-8 bolts and nuts during all phases of SIMSITE Structural Composite Pump assembly:
All fasteners required for assembly of composite parts to be tightened as follows:
FASTENER SIZE TORQUE VALUE
3/8-16 15 ft*lbs (20 N*m) ½-13 40 ft*lbs (54 N*m) 5/8-11 60 ft*lbs (81 N*m) ¾-10 90 ft*lbs (122 N*m)
2. Maximum torque value for all fasteners required for assembly of pumps and motors to composite baseplates not to exceed:
FASTENER SIZE TORQUE VALUE
½-13 50 ft*lbs (68 N*m) 5/8-11 70 ft*lbs (95 N*m) ¾-10 100 ft*lbs (135 N*m)
Torque values higher than those listed may result in damage to threads or inserts. Values are based on dry unlubricated threads.
2.6 FASTENERS-SUCTION AND
DISCHARGE FLANGE
CONNECTIONS
Gaskets used at nozzle connections should be 1/8”- 3/16” thick with a hardness rating of 50-70 Durometer.
Gaskets should be full-faced.
The following chart provides the proper Thread Engagement to Tapped Opening in Pump Nozzle.

Torque values higher than those listed may result in damage to the threads or inserts.
Values are based on dry, unlubricated threads.
3. SHAFT RUN OUT.
The subject pump is a close coupled unit. Proper alignment of pump and driver is essential for a trouble-free installation. Pump-driver combinations are aligned at the factory but can be distorted by piping strain. All foundation bolts, pump and driver feet, and piping should be securely fastened.
IMPORTANT: Check driver shaft runout. Runout of more than .003 inch will interfere with pump alignment.
Noise, vibration, rapid wear and pump damage will result from shaft run out of more than .003 inch.
4. BEARINGS LUBRICATION.
The electric motor supplied with this pump is a Marine Duty Motor. Follow the Motor Manufacture instructions for a proper Lubrication. See Paragraph 17 for MARATHON Motor, Paragraph 18 for SIEMENS Motor. Use schedule for Frame 405 Severe Duty.
5. PRIOR TO STARTING
Before starting the unit, check for:
5.1 Priming
Proper opening of suction valve, allowing suction pipe and pump case to be filled with liquid being handled.
5.2 Free Rotation
Check free rotation of pump.
5.3 Seal Flushing Fluid
The supplied pump equipped with the seal flushing line, which attached to discharge of the pump volute. If an external flushing fluid is used, ensure it is flowing correctly before starting the pump.
5.4 Optional Re-circulation Line.
The pump is supplied with ½” NPT connection (54) at the top of the Pump Casing for optional Re-circulation Line, as such will be needed due to service conditions.
5.5 Impeller Setting and Clearance
The impeller is closed face type and requires no axial setting.
The clearance between the impeller wear ring areas and casing rings are preset by the factory when the pump is new. After the pump has been running, please refer to the appropriate clearance field for the Impeller and Casing Ring in Table 1.
5.6 General Cautions
1. Do not operate the pump against a closed discharge valve for extended periods of time.
