System Specification
For
United States Marine Corps
H-1 Training Devices
AH-1Z and UH-1Y
1. SCOPE
This specification establishes the functional, performance and testing requirements for training device modernizations to Flight Training Devices (FTDs) and Full Flight Simulator (FFS) located at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, NC; MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI; JRB Belle
Chasse, LA; JRB McGuire, NJ; MCAS Camp Pendleton, CA; and MCAS Futenma, JP.
1.1 Identification
The H-1 training device modernization will upgrade a total of sixteen existing training devices consisting of FTDs and an FFS for UH-1Y and AH-1Z aircraft. The primary use of the FTDs and
FFS will be to instruct United States Marine Corps (USMC) H-1 pilots and co-pilots in the skills necessary to complete the AH-1Z and UH-1Y Training and Readiness (T&R) manual throughout all stages of pilot and co-pilot development. Device numbers will be used to identify aircraft type, trainer type, and FTD location. For the purposes of this specification, the terms FTD, FFS, trainer(s), training system, and training device are equivalent and refer to all devices listed below, unless otherwise indicated. The trainers are located at the sites below.
a. 2F196-1 UH-1Y FTD, MCAS New River, NC;
b. 2F197B-2 AH-1Z FTD, MCAS New River, NC;

3.1 Performance and functional requirements
The modified training device performance and functional baseline shall
a. preserve the performance and functionality defined by the results from the baseline configuration audit (BCA) and the pre-modification inspection (PMI) of the existing training devices, as specified in the contract, to describe the simulation characteristics and trainer performance of each flight training device prior to contractor modifications, including all functional relationships between various systems of the trainer, such as flight fidelity, control loading, cockpit shaker systems, instructor stations, dynamic motion seats, cockpit, and visual system (VS);
b. include the added functionality and performance defined in this specification; and
c. not introduce new deficiencies to the BCA and PMI results.
3.1.1 Training missions and objectives
The training devices shall provide
a. full tactical and familiarization navigation training;
b. night vision goggle (NVG) training;
c. instrument flight rules (IFR) navigation;
d. emergency procedures training to AH-1Z and UH-1Y pilots and co-pilots;
e. performance and functionality necessary to conduct training of safety of flight, crew coordination, Naval Aviation Training and Operational Procedure Standardization (NATOPS) procedures, all available aircraft communications modes, shipboard operations, forward looking infrared (FLIR), basic and advanced tactics, weapons delivery procedures, flight formation and electronic counter measures (ECM) operations;
f. interoperability network functionality to connect to the classified Government Aviation
Distributed Virtual Training Environment (ADVTE) network via the Tactical Environment (TEn) as a separate entity in a shared synthetic environment at training locations that have the network available to connect; and
g. simulator training for the contents of T&R syllabus NAVMC 3500.104C and
NAVMC 3500.20D.
3.1.2 Required modes
The training devices shall maintain the existing flight mode, standby mode, initialization mode, freeze mode, and playback mode.
3.1.2.1 Flight mode
The flight mode is the normal operational mode with the following functionality:
a. cockpit, weapons, visual, aural, motion, and control loading systems;
b. ability for the instructor to randomly insert and remove simulation malfunctions listed in
Appendix C;
c. mission record, demonstration record, leadship record, and leadship playback functionality;
and
d. operates both independently from, and linked to other USMC trainers.
3.1.2.2 Standby mode
Standby mode shall
a. have each computational system, subsystem and the respective software applications for each in a ready to launch condition; and
b. have additional data or conditions that shall be applied in order to initiate training.
3.1.2.3 Initialization mode
Initialization mode shall
a. be the condition of the computational system and subsystem where all data and conditions required to accomplish a training scenario, such as databases and initial conditions, are loaded; and
b. the trainer enters freeze mode at completion of the initialization.
3.1.2.4 Freeze mode
Freeze mode shall have the computational system and subsystems in a condition where all training scenario data and conditions are maintained in a static state until a different mode is selected.
3.1.2.5 Playback mode
The playback mode shall provide the means for replay of the recorded simulation data to include play, pause, forward, reverse, total time recorded, and time elapsed when playing.
3.1.2.5.1 Playback performance
The host playback of recorded simulation shall
a. replay all aircraft flight paths and instrument interactions;
b. replay all tones and weapon effects;
c. replay all inserted malfunctions and associated system feedback;
d. replay visual models in visual scene;
e. replay any weapons and countermeasures effects;
f. replay Intercommunication System (ICS) and communications (COMM) audio, to include transmit and receive;
g. replay all weather effects including brownout for ownship and companionship aircraft; and
h. restore to state prior to playback when playback mode ends.
3.1.3 Aircraft simulation
3.1.3.1 Design Basis Aircraft (DBA)
